carrying cargo workshop, designs needed
Hey Everyone,
Community Cycles just put on our first ever Winter Cycling workshop, and it was really awesome. (I hope to have photos soon, and will post those when we do.)
We talked about how to outfit your bike, and how to outfit your person for comfortable riding in the (admittedly, mild) Boulder winter. What to avoid, how to ride differently, etc.
We made a zine for the workshop, and I'm working on getting it into pdf form. I'll post it to the bike collectives wiki when it's formatted correctly.
We'll be holding a few more of the same class this winter. We're hoping to get someone to come and film it, so the video will be available later.
We're also working now on planning a similar class for the spring, but about carrying things on bikes using trailers, racks, bags, etc.
Does anyone have decent plans for home made trailers or panniers? I know at bikebike in San Francisco, someone had a workshop about coroplast panniers. Does anyone know who put that on? I've love to get ahold of that person or the design.
In our workshops, we're trying really hard to focus just as much on the diy solutions, and not just "here's the product you need. it costs this much." So DIY solutions are going to be a big part of the trailer workshop.
If anyone has plans or pictures for a home made trailer, we would love to include them in the workshop. Even if you don't have plans, but have some good photos which will allow us to reengineer them, we'd love it. Especially no-weld, mostly bike part trailers, since bike parts are pretty easy for us to come by.
Thanks!
Again, I'll post up the pdf once I get it. We've also got a very loose curriculum that we can share. Email me off the list and I'm happy to share that with anyone who wants. It's basically an outline of the class.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the links. Aaron is actually on our agenda. Not the man himself but his ideas and his zine. I had the pleasure of meeting him and hanging out a bit in San Francisco last year at bikebike!. Got to see his diy folding bike, as well.
If anyone else out there is interested in making trailers, or seeing some well thought out, in-use-in-the-real-world easy and cheap to make trailers, I highly recommend his works.
Thanks much!

Hey, thanks for including mine! ;)
On that page is a link to a larger trailer using the same concept,
and it has full build photos.
The only thing is the size of this trailer showed the limitations of
the design, as between the long side rails and the thin axle plates
some flex occurs. Normally on a trailer I like to cant the wheels
inwards a bit for stability, but if you do that on one this long and
load it up then things flex and the tires rub the cargo box. But the
good thing is that since the trailer is so wide it's darn stable and
so the canting is not really needed.

This company has some excellent products including kits for building no-weld trailers. A little pricier than from scratch but more or less fool proof. I have a custom cargo that I built from a kit and their standard canoe trailer and both work exceptionally well. I use the cargo trailer mostly to haul my hockey equipment to the rink (year round in Ottawa, yes most people think I'm crazy), occasionally for groceries or other errands. Largest item I have hauled is a 28" snowblower.

in regards to making panniers, I see sewing machines at garage sales all the time so* *I bought one for ten dollars. After a little practice, and many questions for the ladies at the yardage shop, I made some panniers that seem to work well. Then I made a cover for a bike trailer that was affordable, because it had no cover,. If you can take a bike apart you can figure out a sewing machine, it's kind of fun to.

We've made a few prototypes from Al rims (flattened by heating with a propane torch until malleable), learned from Chuck Harris, of helmet mirror fame.
A photo of his trailer is at http://home.earthlink.net/~mike.web/CH.html
Ours may be available someday, there's a sketchy view of one hanging up under the light on the right in the background at http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Bicycles/Winter-Cycling-Symposium/9816590_L4xjH#6668...
We use this to haul sleds and skis, at least 100 lbs. Buying (or salvaging) a Burley hitch will save a lot of work.
