Alternatively (since burning plastic isn't great), if you take care to ensure that you're cutting off the ends of your zip ties directly straight across (at a 90-degree angle to the tie itself) then it doesn't have the chance to become razor-sharp! If you're teaching young'uns, it's a really good thing to ensure that they do to get them into the habit of it.

It only takes a second to wave a lit match over the end of that snipped end to make it harmless.
(I just zoomed in on the beautiful pic of the ghost bike recently posted and could see the razor end of the zip tie)
