Hi all,
Bici Centro is going to offer a Youth-Earn-A-Bike program in several junior high schools in Santa Barbara. We want to offer scholarships for low-income families who can't pay. Does anybody have some examples of application forms to share?
Thank you,
Christine Bourgeois www.bicicentro.org
I was really hoping to see someone else's response to this, but I'll contribute the bit of experience we have had here.
In all of our programs, we have tried to set up a referral agency or used existing criteria to identify need rather than coming up with our own application.
We build bikes and bicyclist, and we do a decent job of that. We are not experienced or very good at determining level of need or qualification for financial assistance. So we ask the WIC program, the shelter, Goodwill, and other orgs that already do this to refer people to our bike classes. It works great for us.
You might be able to use free-and-reduced lunch as a qualifier for scholarship, especially if the school can help verify that. Or have the school provide you with referrals for scholarship.
Hope that helps!

Here in Davis, so far we have been pretty much relying on the honor system. We ask for $5/hr for the use of the shop, plus an appropriate donation for parts (there's a guideline posted), and if they find the price too steep, we tell them they can volunteer. Basically, people donate what they think is fair. This tends to follow the suggested donation of $5/hr, but since we don't keep track of when they come and when they go, folks leave the amount they think is appropriate.

We do "Bikes for Goodwill Organizations" as a complementary service to other local non-profits, they qualify people as in-need, we give them a bike.

In a similar way, we allow low income people to take classes from us for free if they have an "access" card (used for medicare, food stamp, unemployment, etc. in PA) It is imperfect, but I would have to agree with Scott. You would have to ask a lot of really nosey questions to try to make that kind of determination yourself.
