How do you report "progress" to donors?
I am curious how people report some of the more qualitative gains (soft skills like critical thinking, decision making, delayed gratification, etc.) in students of earn a bike programs to donors in a way that indicates that their money is well spent. I am especially interested in ways that this is communicated to donors through means other than anecdotes. Whether it is right or not to find ways to quantify a qualitative gain, I am still interested in hearing strategies and success stories.

Response number two: Measuring outcomes (changes in behaviors and skills) has been a challenge for our Earn-a-Bike program since most of our programing is drop-in. We design our programs with the specific life skills in mind and the Development Asset Model (Search Institute). We are in the process of working with the REACH program at the University of New England to find and/or craft a measurement tool that will work with our program and kids. The tools we have explored to date are not a good fit. We hope to have something to report to the Think Tank by the end of the first quarter of 2013. Gil Noam of Harvard has developed a tool to use with his PEAR Model called the Holistic Student Assessment, but we haven't been able to get him to consider letting us contract to use this tool which is meant to use with afterschool programs in partnership with schools.

The Chicago employability assessment is also a tool that was developed to measure soft skill development in youth, although it could be applied more widely. You might consider using it as an assessment tool. http://www.chooseyourfuture.org/cte/employability-assessment. It is a good place to start.
