recommendations for filing federal taxes (990/ez) online
Dear Think Tank -
It seems we can no longer file our federal taxes by mail and must e-file / file online. Do you file your federal taxes online, like a 990 or 990-EZ? What website do you use/recommend to file online?
For California orgs - the state filing seems easier, still allowing you/us to simply fill, print, and mail-in the forms. But if you have any suggestions there, I'd be happy to hear.
Thank you in advance. -Matt Bikes del Pueblo, San Diego - Kumeyaay land
Hi Matt,
We use this for the 990EZ: https://efile.form990.org/ I haven't tried any other ones, but this one seems to work for our simple needs. You do need to wait until February/March for them to update to the new year's forms
For California, we print & mail. I am not aware of any website that efiles for California nonprofits. The PDF form on the CA website allows you to type in and then print, so it's not that bad.
Also, don't forget the California AG RRF-1 form yearly and the California Secretary of State "Statement of Information" form every other year
Take care, -dave

Thank you Peter and Dave for the responses & info! Much appreciated.
We haven't gone over $50k. In the process of working on taxes I learned we seem to have been mistakenly filing the 990-EZ instead of the 990-N. But then I realized that CA asks a little more info and then it seems maybe we've been filing the 990-EZ for that reason, and I already have the 990-EZ filled out, and just want to submit it, then I learn we have to e-file ....
Dave, is exactly the site I was trying. I got the most annoying thing where it says we already have an account with our EIN or whatever, then when I try to request a password reset, it says we don't have an account or something. Perhaps our EIN is linked to a past member's personal email address ..? Picking up the pieces seems harder than starting fresh.
I bet I could just print and mail. But after more thought, I think I'll just e-file the 990-N because I can do that directly through the IRS. Then fill, print, mail the state forms.
"Statement of Information" sounds new to me but maybe thats the statement of board of directors and officers, or another one. I think I have them all by now: RRF-1, CT-TR-1, 199(?) etc. Well, I better get back to it.
Thanks all. -Matt

Hi Matthew,
The IRS now requires that you e-file Form 990-EZ. You may want to try a different provider for the 990-EZ or contact your current provider's customer support for assistance. Here's the current list of providers for 2023: IRS 990-EZ Providers 2023 [3].
You can also find providers for other years at IRS MeF Providers [4].
It's true that the 990-EZ is a more complicated form. It's unfortunate that the IRS doesn't provide their own portal for the 990-EZ like they do for the 990-N, instead relying on MeF providers.
If you need to file a 990-N, please note that the IRS changed the login process a few years ago. You now need to log in via a login.gov [5] or id.me [6] account. Previously, you could directly access the e-Postcard site at IRS e-Postcard [7], but now you need to follow the updated login procedures.
For more information, visit the IRS page on the Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations [8].

Thank you Jonathon for your response. I am glad you provided those links & info for anyone who is unaware of them & it. I was wondering which of the many 990-EZ filing options do people use/prefer. But I'm leaning towards going the 990-N route now, because, like what you said, its unfortunate (a pain etc. etc. etc.) that the IRS doesn't provide its own filing portal for the 990-EZ as it does for the 990-N. Thanks again. -Matt San Diego
