FYI - I tried to take a Toronto > NYC Amtrak earlier this year, and was told "No Bikes" by the Amtrak folks. Maybe it's different for different lines, but in any case, make sure you check ahead! The main exception to the bike rules is folding bikes. Generally speaking, folding bikes are allowed on all Amtrak trains as carry-on luggage. If you do decide to bring any bike on board, including a folding bike, be sure to print out a copy of their policies. Many conductors aren't aware of all the nuances and having some proof with you is always helpful.
