Assembling List of Student/University Bike Collectives and Advocacy Groups
Hello Think Tank,
I am assembling a list of student/university bike collectives and advocacy groups, hoping that by organizing and learning from each other and from outside experts, we can multiply our efforts to increase bicycle use.
Does anyone know of any bicycling-related student groups, or individual students with an interest in bicycle advocacy? I am also interested in environmental and public transit-related groups.
Hey Ryan, we are a university platform (not sure yet to use the word collective) that works directly on the UANL campus for the inclusion of bicycles and the creation of bike infrastructure we have been working for almost 2 years now. What kind of info do you need? Raquel T. -TigreBici

Late '90's, the University of Montana admin proposed a $12 million parking garage to 'solve' transport challenges here in Missoula. The student body rose up and said 'no way, we have not implemented better solutions yet.' The admin said 'OK, forget the parking garage, and do not complain about transportation and parking issues ever again.'
So, a group of us wrote some enabling legislation and put a $4 fee per student per semester on the student ballot, which strongly passed. It is now around $30 per semester and funds a student-run bus service, a cruiser co-op, a director and staff, outreach, etc.

I recommend this approach for any University lacking transportation options. The director, from the beginning, is Nancy Wilson, and she enjoys helping other groups. Her contact is linked above.
There's quite a few, it seems to be even more common up here in Canada. Nearly all of our major institutions now have collectives on campus including ours, the Bike Root on the University of Calgary campus (well sort of). The one university collective I have always held in highest regard is the Bike Chain on the University of Toronto's campus who have been able to convince their institution to include a student levy to fund the project, which with the amount of students that go there, amounts to a substantial yearly operating budget. Here's a google doc with a list of the top Canadian universities (U15) and their respective collectives: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlvZPvDFNNubdGJrRFRYVl9FQUFTRmN.... You should be able to edit this document, and feel free to (and anyone for that matter), it may just be Canadian universities right now but feel free to add whatever you want. .godwin

Thanks,
Hey Ryan!
B!KE @ Trent is a small student-run workshop on campus at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. We just opened for limited hours this September and are excited to see that despite limited advertising we have had students coming to use our nearly fully-equipped shop space. B!KE @ Trent is a satellite shop for B!KE: The Community Cycling Hub which operates in downtown Peterborough. Both shops are non-for-profit, membership-based spaces where anyone in the community can come in and work on their bike. B!KE was originally started by Trent students in 2006 and has grown out of church basements into the two shops that we currently occupy. In the off season we run educational workshops on bicycle repair and work on bicycle-related advocacy in the local community.
As we just opened our shop on campus, I was curious to see if anyone has any ideas as to how to advertise to a campus community.
Cheers,
Mike
