Floor Pump Recommendation
Hi Folks,
Over the year we have tried many different floor pumps with the pump heads not lasting more than a year. What brand and model floor pump has been the most reliable for you? We prefer floor pumps with the gauge close to the floor since the gauges don't bust when the pump falls over. We are okay with either smart head pumps or dual headed (Presta/Schrader) on opposite ends of the heads.
Thanks,
Andy

The Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen mostly uses Park and Pedro's pumps, but I'm personally dumbfounded how you get yours to last "more than a year" -- we're lucky if even the staff-only pumps last more than a month, not to mention the general-use floor pumps...

The JoeBlow Sport is the pump most of my volunteers ask for when they are pumping a tire. The gauge is low on the pump and it has a sturdy metal base, plus it is easy to get up to 100psi. Its been used for the last two years, and has been phenomenal the entire time.

We use the Filzer brand from MEC. It has the fancy head that allows for both valves without adjustment, and ours have held up rather well. The chuck's grip start's to slip after about a year of use, so we just buy another one (parts are available, including O rings).
A ToPeak Pro model gave out completely after a year, and a Park model was always problematic, and its locking lever was opposite the Filzer (which pulls up to lock) and that always confused everyone.
The biggest challenge has been with customers used to the old pumps where you opened the head and flipped the internal bits around for Presta. We have to keep an eye in case anyone starts to do this, because these "smart" heads do not like to be taken apart.
(We do have an air compressor, but it's in the back room and used mainly for testing the piles of innertubes that come in.)

I like BETO pumps (cheap--and they last at least as long as the Park pumps). Sometimes we buy the Filzer pump head ( http://www.mec.ca/product/5014-150/filzer-zephyr-floor-pump-clever-head) and put that on the BETO pump; the smart head works much better, especially with presta valves, and the long hose reaches up to wheels even while the bike is in the stand.
You can wrap tape around pump head to prevent the more enthusiastic patrons from trying to flip its guts around.

The SKS rennkompressor is the best one that we've found and we've tired about everything. The parts are completely rebuildable, but you have to order replacement parts through SKS instead of most wholesale accounts. We just order 3 rebuild kits at a time, incase something goes out, and we order the rubber valve engagers in 5. In one year, you probably go through 3-5 rubber valve engagers, and might need the rebuild kits once every 2 years.
