Bike Peeps, So we're thinking of doing Bike Valet-ing for Earth Day, but the organizers are concerned about Liability and all that good logistical stuff. Based on those of you whose shops have done this, some questions; -Do you think this is a good way to get the word out?
-do you think this is a good way to raise money
for the shop (tip jars)?
-what did you have to do for logistics/
liabillity and planning ahead?
All the best and big thanks,
Ed Santa Barbara Bici Centro -Where creativity and mobility meet BiciCentro.org
-Do you think this is a good way to get the word out?
Absolutely...Staple a small piece of paper with info to each bike before it goes back out. Have a good representative of your org who can chat with people who have questions/want to know more.
-do you think this is a good way to raise money for the shop (tip jars)?
Yep! If you have t-shirts or other merch type stuff, some folks are more comfortable buying something than giving a donation/tip.
-what did you have to do for logistics/liabillity and planning ahead?
Liability, nothing. As long as you have a good system in place to deal with people who think you damaged/lost their bike or who lost their ticket you shouldn't have any problems. The organizers will feel better to know you're thinking about these issues and know what to do about them.
Ahead of time we got commitments from volunteers (weeks ahead), planned what we were bringing (tools, stand, water, bananas, display, stickers etc.), got t-shirts to identify volunteers and tried not to drink too much the night before, ha.
I'm sure you already checked the valet page on the wiki, but here it is again for good measure: http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Valet_Bike_Parking
good luck! Brian UBP

Use player cards, cut them in half. Give one side ot the owner and the other half between the spokes.
I would arrange them in groups of four or five, to make collections or sorting easier on your and the owner.

In Salt Lake City we used raffle tickets to identify bike owners. We kept track of our beginning and ending numbers so we could get an estimate of how many bikes we parked.
