Advanced Repair Classes for Adults?
Hey Folks,
Here at Neighborhood Bike Works http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/ we have had a surge of interest in our Adult Repair Classes http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/programs/adult-bike-repair-classes/ and are considering expanding our offerings in this realm in response.
Our current system consists of 4 consecutive 2.5 hour Monday night classes. We cover Flat Fixing, Brake Adjustment and repair, Bearing Adjustment and Repair, and Drive Train Adjustment and Repair for $80. It is taught by either our Board President or our Lead Mechanic, with an alternating Youth Assistant.
*Does anyone have 2 tiers of classes, or an advanced class they offer adult participants?* If so, what do you cover? Who teaches (Staff, Volunteer, Board, Youth)? Do you have established curriculum you could share?

I've been thru a few, depends if you do a fast, see everything, then do lab during open shop time on your own bike (excepting bb, hub, head) or expect hands on during those 2.5 hour segments.
Youth present and helping and/or teaching may be good depending if you are a youth program and/or your demographic. Father son days? Mom daughter pairs? Female teachers for same? And/or safe space issues?
Handouts? Video preview/review for those falling asleep in evening class?
Different languages version(s).
Fixie messengers welcome? Got to pay me to ride? Or fun shop? Bike Hospital for toddler/ kidical mass set?
Free come back see it enough times to teach it? Or accessible review? Paid staff or AVO?

As Dances, the first decision is all show and tell, part show and tell and part hands on, or all hands's on. I use the part hands on, part show and tell split my very quick class, 3 hrs. Sounds like you are doing 100% hands on.
One approach is to consider is how a commercial shop tends to break out work as, I assume, people are taking the class so they can do what a shop would do.
Basic - Tune and repair as necessary without component disassembly. Advanced - Overhaul and replace as necessary; BB, wheel hubs, headset, & gear sets.
This is how we do basic/advanced. Other than gear sets and chains, given the time required to teach overhaul and the general lack of response to class offerings, I suggest people set aside most of their Saturday, bring their bike to the coop, and do their bike with volunteer instruction.
I'd also suggest minor wheel tuning with brake repair, especially with direct-pull/linear-pull/Vee brakes. In my experience the lower quality groups require spot on adherence to specifications which usually requires a pretty true wheel.
Wheel repair/building tends to be an additional subject.
When I was doing some research to see if our model could be improved, I came across Jake's Bike Shop's services. I think it serves as a good general outline of basic through advanced skills; Classic Tune-up, Deluxe Tune-up, Supreme Tune-up. They have pdf for each. And his A la Carte list is a good list of skills/tasks to be considered for including in a class.
