A catchy name for "women's night"?
Hey all,
Alex here from Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles in Ithaca, NY. We're currently reorganizing and overhauling shop logistics and we're looking for a catchy name for our "women's night." We want to stray away from that name because the night is not exclusively women but instead a place where women and transpeople are the active shop leaders. Any names catchy or appropriate names that you use or come to mind?
Thanks, Alex
We call ours simply "Women and Trans Night." It's not catchy and doesn't turn into an acronym, but it gets the point across. And when people come in and say "Ladies Night!" we politely tell them that it is, in fact, Women and Trans Night.

"Wenches with Wrenches" seems popular, though perhaps not inclusive
for trans people.

We have Women's Trans-portation night, but some people have found it confusing.

We tried "Trans ANd Girls, Yeah!" or TANGY! It was funny among the few of us participating. If the bike co-op world pulls off finding a good word that's positive, non-othering, and inclusive about describing everyone but gender straight bio-dudes, I will be very impressed. : )

We simply call ours "women's shop night." The transgendered individuals that come to our shop on these evenings consider themselves women, so we honor that and do as well. We choose not to further set them apart as different from the rest of us because they were previously assigned to a different gender.
BTW Jason--I strongly suggest that you re-evaluate including the word "bitches" in relation to a women"s nite. It is a very emotionally-charged word, which could possibly offend some women and keep them away.

Krista,
that's always been my argument about the naming of our women and trans
night. I agree that Women's night should be sufficient, and that trans
women would of course feel welcome. Trans men I've asked say they
would rather come on the regular nights and "guy it up" In the end
though I've always deferred to the women running the program, who
apparently feel the "& trans" is important.
To me it begins to feel like the ever expanding GLBTQXYZPDQ acronym
for every conceivable sexual orientation except for straight which
though it may be appropriate for a queer group I think is less sowhen
it comes to fixing bikes. I also think "everybody but dudes" might
meet with even more resistance from the dudes than we've already
experienced. In this case in my opinion it's best to keep things
simple, not try to be too cute or too PC about it. Just call it
Women's night.
