- Are there any shops out there who buy locks in bulk and re-sell
them? The rationale for doing this would be that providing a good-quality low-cost lock to people visiting the shop would reduce the likelihood of having their bike stolen. I see the rampant bike-theft here as one of the common reasons people stop cycling or don't want to invest time or money in their bike.
My questions are, where do you get locks from, and how is the program run? Are their any other initiatives you take to reduce the problem of bike-theft?

We sell inexpensive U-locks. THey are not top quality, but they are
more than adequate for the type of theft we have here, and they are
relatively affordable.

not to hijack the sourcing locks question, but does anyone include in their curriculum/EAB/youth classes some kind of locking information? i know there's the video of the guy in NYC grading lock jobs on the street, and in one of our classes here (community cycles in boulder, co), we start the class with a walk around the neighborhood, to point out some of the lock jobs that are less than stellar.
it's a weird balance, because in order to teach someone good lock technique, it's easiest to show them examples of how not to do it, which is basically teaching them to think like a bike thief...how to do this without actually encouraging them to become bike thieves? it's not a major concern, but one that came up while we discussed the issue. does anyone else have experience with this?

Hello, we (at the Durham Bike Co-op), have been buying a bunch of locks off of "ACE Hardware Outlet". Namely the Masterlock Chain/Combo lock. We ask for $5 to cover our costs for buying/shipping. This seems to be a good price point. For some of the kids/youth (who've been good volunteers), we just let them have one. If people want anything nicer (ie, u-locks) we point people to the local bike shop. I'm curious to hear about the low cost u-locks.

At Community Cycles we include a lock with each bike earned. The lock we distribute cost us $13 wholesale through QBP. We sell these for $25.
I think it's critical that we distribute locks with the EAB program especially because of the demographic we serve. Rich ________________________

Since we have a policy of non-competition with the local bikes shops, I usually just refer people to MEC and the bike shops near MEC that compete with them on price. Decent locks can be had for $10-$20.

We're a 5 minute ride from MEc as well, and currently suggest people go there to get a lock, lights, fenders, brand-new tires, etc. However MEC caters to suburbanite yuppies with money. A membership is required and that assumes you have a phone number and fixed address. Many of the people who feel relatively comfortable in our shop may not want to go to MEC or feel welcome there.
The same factors are associated with most bike-shops.

We here at the 816 bicycle collective (KCMO) had a very hard time dealing with theft and heard all the usual stories of bikes gettin stolen or sold or whatever. The conclusion we came to was enforce a very simple rule, if you are building a bike from scratch you A. have to buy a 5 dollar lock from us or B. show us a lock we deem suitable and physically bring it to our shop.
Sounds a little harsh but it cuts down on people taking advantage of a free resource. As far as the u-locks, the best suggestion we could give would be buying chain and locks at the hardware store and sell them for cheap.

HEy!
In a non-competetive spirit we charge suggest retail.or slightly below for inexpensive u locks.. like twenty bucks or something, but we rely on donated locks for our free bike folk or for the walk in's that clearly have no money/place to live/food to eat etc.. we couch the cheap locks with warnings though.. visual deterent is one of em.. and I've seen over the years many cheap u locks mangle into a pretzel, while the bike is M.I.A... sadness..
good locks ain't cheap and cheap locks ain't good..
however.. a simple dumpstered cable complemented with a u lock.. whata difference! It's like a magical theft repelant .. but I'm sure there are some exceptions.
bulk buying is a great idea. If you have a distributor account (NORCO is good for this, maybe ASAMA.. talk to Victor directly if you can) approach them with your needs, state you're a non profit, and they may provide you with booking discounts or Pro deal on many units in one buy. Problem: you need a lump of funds for this and most of the time, it's on a ONE Time transaction condition.. but have at 'er.. see what happens??
