Teaching Riding Skills
Hey All, Our EAB program is almost 7 years old. Over the years we've gotten pretty good at teaching bike mechanics to our EABers but we fall short when it comes to teaching riding skills. One of my goals for this year is to institute a riding component to the program.
Are any of you teaching riding skills as part of your EAB or Build a Bike programs? If so we'd love to hear how you do it.
Ride On!
Rich, we're in the same boat you are. To help us get started, two of our mechanics attended League of American Bicyclists' Road Safety 101 classes to learn how they're structured and what materials they use. We're considering moving forward with LCI certifications for both, because such things sound good when you're pitching your services to church and school groups.
I'm interested to see what other groups are doing.

Doug, are you making it to YBS in NYC?
4 of us hope to go down, and learn about how to better what we are doing re: youth.

Hi all,
In Santa Barbara, our EAB programs consist of 18 hours of instruction taught by a certified League Cycling Instructor and a TA. They are offered in different schools as an after-school program to 12-16 yo students (1h30 twice a week for 6 weeks). We teach basic bike mechanics (fix a flat, adjust brakes, derailleur) and we follow the curriculum from the League of American Bicyclists for teaching riding skills (it was previously called Kids 2: it is basically Traffic Skills 101 adapted for youth). The first 2/3 weeks, depending on the group, are spent on the blacktop where students practice handling skills, review the rules of the road and become better riders. The last 2/3 weeks, we take the group on the streets.
Here is a link to an article http://bicicentro.org/news?mode=PostView&bmi=1179728that I recently wrote about the success of our EAB programs (called Pedal Power)

Pedal On!
We hope to establish an EAB program this year in Longmont, education classes continue to be a struggle, too. Even though Longmont has several LCI's as well as Boulder and area communities, we are having a difficult time connecting with them. Initially we were hoping to conduct classes in Spanish, however, finding english speaking LCI's was difficult, and those who speak Spanish.... forget it.
Are there any other recognized national or regional bicycle instruction programs or, is the League the only game in town?
thx
