We are expanding the Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop from 500 sqft to a 2,500sqft space with 15 ft ceilings. It our current space we have rows of hooks on the wall and just hang the bikes from the wheel.

We have open metal trusses so are able to use standard beam clamps, 3/8" threaded rod, strut channels and "J" hooks for wheels. Bikes are on industrial shelving. Used warehouse racking is often cheap.

How do you get to a bike in the middle?
Do the wheels just hang over the edge?
Thanks

I'm guessing the question is directed at our rack, we find it can be a bit of a challenge as the spacing is only 16" apart, but if you stagger the bikes it's fine. If we were going to build it again we'd cut the PVC longer to ensure all bikes fit in, I think right now they are 6' long. The rack works great, and looks better, because it's suspended from bike chains (not shown in the picture) and doesn't impede getting to any of the bikes on the bottom.

We built suspended racks out of PVC pipe cut in half, suspended by bike chains from the ceiling. A hook on the wall holds the bikes in place. See the attached photo.

We are working on our 'ped tech' warehouse- 6k sq ft. It is 3 doors down from our community shop. The nicer bikes stay at our shop for rebuild by the community, while the lesser bikes slide over to ped tech for repurpose.
We are building storage racks, shelving, etc from: wood pallets. They are free, plentiful, easy to work with, sturdy, and look good.
Velocipede (Baltimore) uses C-Channel with J-hooks riding along the inside on large washers. We hang the bikes vertically from their wheels in two rows. To get to the back row you have to slide the front row out of the way enough to make an opening. Some pictures here:
