Winter shut down?
The Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop in Lexington KY has been up and running solidly since last Nov. Our question is, how many shops shut down or tweak their hours during the cold weather months? We do not anticipate closing completely because our shop is used by so many, but we do need to get some rest for the volunteers and work on some education classes.
Currently we are open Tuesday 8-11 pm Thursday 6-9 pm Sunday 1-5 pm
Currently, thinking about staying open on Sundays during the winter but making Tuesday and education night and then closing on Thursday till spring when we can start to build up a lot of sale bikes.
Cheers Tim
We have a whole bike winter program to promote cycling year round. We have a bike winter art show, how to dress seminars, winterizing your bike, 2" rides (any time there is two inches or more new precipitation on the roads we have a ride. Polka ride in January, Tiki ride in Febuary, We make winter fun in a social way to keep the shops open in Chicago

We're (regrettably) a bit less festive here in Sacramento, but we don't change our hours when weather turns less mild. Which is sort of good for us; the lower number of customers helps give our volunteers a chance to kind of hang out in a more relaxed atmosphere, and we can usually get a fair number of bikes all built up and waiting for someone from the throngs of fair-weather cyclists to come and adopt them.

In warmer months, we have Open Shop 3 days a week - Wed/Thurs 6-8pm and Sat 12-4pm. Once the snow flies, we change that to Open Shop on Saturdays and Closed Shop on Wed/Thurs 6-8pm. Closed Shop is just for the volunteers and lets us fix up the bikes we've collected over the warmer months, work on building repairs, and the like.

One of our goals is to be known as the commuter bike shop in town. We
believe that cycling and bike commuting are year round activities.
We'll keep busy with open shop, Earn-A-Bike, classes, retail, workshops,
building sale bikes, meetings and shop set up.
Our Fall/Winter hours are Noon-6p.m. everyday except Wednesdays.

We keep our hours the same in at MoBo Cincinnati. We also run a winter workshop series, how to commute during winter, and short winter rides. Administratively, we offer our core volunteers an opportunity to go through mechanic training to improve their already incredible skills. This year we are offering a woman-only, woman-taught six week bike maintenance series.

It gets real cold here in Ontario through the winter and while February is quiet, we do keep the shop open for our regular hours year round. We also try to offer additional winter programming like winter cycling skills workshops and DIY winter bike gear (making studded tires and fenders) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 5-8 and Sunday 2-5

In Portland, we have customers all year. It does decline a bit in the winter though. Currently we're still running our "summer hours" schedule. Unless a volunteer drops their hours, it seems like we'll keep them going as long as possible. Many people come in to the shop for fenders, new brake pads and to clean their bikes during the rainy months. Bike Farm has had winterizing programs in the past, but we don't currently have one in the works for this year.
Current schedule: Sun: 12pm-4pm Mon: 4pm-9pm Wed: 4pm-9pm Fri: 12pm-4pm Sat: 12pm-4pm Women&Trans Nights: 1st & 3rd Tues/month 4pm-7pm.

Here in Baltimore we cut back an hour during winter hours.
wed/thur: 6-9pm sun: 1-4pm
but yeah, I think if you feel like you should give your volunteers a winter break you should; Rather it be 11 months of solid energy than 12 months of hurt feelings you know? standing in the cold concrete garage during January contributes a LOT to burnout (in my experience.)

In Troy, NY we tweak the hours quite a bit. Normal hours for us are 2 days a week for a total of 6 hours. When winter comes we cut back to one day a week/sometimes once a month. Volunteers still show up regularly but focus is more directed on getting the shop in order while community walk-ins are slim. We also hole winter cycling workshops. eg Troy Bike Rescue

At Plan B in New Orleans we are open year round given our temperate climate. We usually take a 2-3 week break at the end of August through labor day or a week after (prime hurricane season - the city is empty and it's way too hot to even think, much less wrench).
Winter is actually our busiest season, with temperatures in the 50's-70's, for the most part.
If you ever want to come down for a balmy winter break, come see us!
