Hey friends,
Do y'all know of or have specific insurance coverage for your community bike operations? I got basic renter insurance for a community shop here but know little about it and it could probably be improved.
Thanks! Tara
Yo! I work within bikeshare, but we're starting to host a lot of group bike rides and such and I've been tasked with thinking about insurance coverage for those rides -- that covers all participants. In looking that up, I learned about the League of American Bicyclist diff insurance options. Maybe something that they offer will be aligned with what you're looking for... or it may be at least a starting point for framing what you might need/want.
I dropped a couple links below. Give 'em a look. Good luck. -- E

Hello Tara, At Third Hand Bike Co-op (thirdhand.org), we have general liability and property insurance (we own the building) and Director's and Officer's insurance to cover coordinators. The former is from American Family Insurance (because one of our coordinators knew the agent) and the latter is from United States Liability Insurance Company (recommended by the agent). That's what we're comfortable with collectively though the answer will differ among organizations! Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck. Scott is a good guy, very thorough.
If you want to get good liability INS for leading rides and events where you instruct the public on safe riding, it is worth looking into the LAB's certification https://bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor. They include coverage if someone is hurt on your ride, and if they are hurt later, and claim that you "told them to ride in the middle of the lane" . There are some paperwork hoops to jump, but you should be tracking participants anyway, and it is pretty excellent coverage for $25/year (after passing a $500 certification seminar). These are all great resources thanks y’all! I was also wondering if you have volunteers and/or participants fill out a waiver and what that looks like?
