Hey folks!
Our Community Bikes in Vancouver, Canada, is looking for a way for volunteers to electronically sign up.
We have some limit to how many volunteers can access the space at the same time each day, we tend to spread the labour around a bit, and we currently have used a few online services that can link to our website, but doesn't link with our current staffing calendar and event calendar.
For that we are simply using a google calendar. But I'm wondering if anyone has had success with some type of really easy to use interface, that generates reports for metrics 'n stuff, and that is very user simple.

Are you are looking for a way for people to sign up online to volunteer while integrating that with the staff calendar, or are you looking for a way for people to electronically sign-in / out from a shop, or do you want a combination of both of these facets?

I guess looking for a way for volunteers to sign up remotely, and see what's available, and alternately what shifts are already spoken for. Like a reservation. It wouldn't be necessary to see the staff schedule from that end. But that the staff have a 'one click' access to the volunteer schedule to see how many folk and who are expected that day. And we are hoping to develop an electronic sign in / out software or app (currently the ones that are in existence don't completely meet our needs ) so we wouldn't need that in a sign up interface. well..

Our experience with online volunteer sign-up has been a mixed bag. That's because we discovered that roughly only about 50% of people were actually interested in signing-up online. Regardless, it would be interesting to have a dedicated reservation-type application specific to Community Bike shops that could share information with any back-end program.
In regards to sign-up interfaces, I remember your thread from September, 2015. Our Community Bikes may want to reconsider reinventing the wheel by contributing to the development of existing software projects. I am lead developer of this project, https://github.com/fspc/Yellow-Bike-Database/wiki , and I always welcome issue requests because my objective is to develop a product that is useful to the majority of the Community Bike projects out there.

this sounds pretty interesting actually.
I have a consultation with a group of students named Code For Change, and they develope apps and interfaces for non profits. Their list is pretty long though, and it's been about a year since we first spoke and we are just now starting to talk about it. Our intention is to have an app or interface (ipad or desktop terminal) in the shop that people can use to sign in and out of as customers and volunteers minimum. And then expand from there the type of things this app could potentially do.

Code For Change sounds awesome.
One of the areas I am exploring is leveraging the talent from the rapidly growing high-tech firms in our area. There is a meetup called Morgantown Codes which would invite interested folk to coding nights at our shop where participants could acquire volunteer hours. They could choose to contribute to any FLOSS project that helps to get people on bikes; e.g. Community Bike Shop software, cyklokoalicia/OpenSourceBikeShare, etc.
