Neil, Are you looking for a broad sweep or specifically bikes components government taxes import export duty etc??? James Weber Olympia Wa 360-894-0908 this has voice spam so say Clyde

I would suggest contacting the NBDA for a crude number, perhaps US customs too. However most states don't even know their economic impact, let alone a worldwide total of all those unknowns.

I can speak to US data, but not global. Two resources:
- America Bikes has info on state-by-state business impact of bike retail
stores in the US: http://www.americabikes.org/state_data_index 2. A UMass study measured the economic impact of publicly funded pedestrian & bicycle infrastructure in the US: http://www.peri.umass.edu/236/hash/64a34bab6a183a2fc06fdc212875a3ad/publicat...

CicLAvia www.ciclavia.org/ this is an event held several time in Los angeles and in other cities around the world where street are closed to car traffic and open to bicycles and pedestrians only. the link above is to the los angeles version. One of the pluses of these vents is the major increase in sales along the route. i Am not sure the organizers have successfully tracked the positive impact but if they have that information it will help

Look on line for 'peer reviews, effects of bicycling on the global economy'

Neil,
I recommend sending an e-mail to Todd Litman at the Victoria Transport Policy Institute http://www.vtpi.org/, and checking out the list of documents published on that website. The e-mail is: info@vtpi.org.
Here's my quick plug: Litman and the VTPI are tremendous (and totally under-appreciated) assets for the entire movement for better transportation. A data-based approach is crucial for supporting our work, especially when we're trying to influence policy makers, and this dude is providing that data. I saw him speak at the last Towards Carfree Cities conference (World Carfree Network), and he had people's heads spinning. One of the best presentations I've ever seen, on any topic. Not exactly what one might expect from an economist, but he's the real deal, trust me.
Good luck, Dugan Meyer
