southeast regional bikebike, atlanta, ga, january 09
Hiya, friends.
We're kicking around the idea of hosting a Southeast Regional BikeBike here in Atlanta in January. Being centrally located in the region and having a little bit of shop success, we've been hosting visitors and fielding questions from people in the very beginning stages of community bike shoppery (ranging from Columbia, SC to Savannah, GA, as well as neighborhoods around the Metro Atlanta region). We thought it would be nice to get everyone in this part of the woods together to have conversation-style workshops designed to help folks tackle the practical issues of getting started, especially within the socio-economic and political context of the South. We've got an amazing community arts center at our disposal, and it's down the street from our shop, making things awfully convenient and affordable. Food not Bombs has even agreed to help keep us fed.
This is not meant to detract from BikeBike. We could call it the Dirty South Community Bike Shop Jamboree if it needs to have a different name. We just thought it would be nice to have something designed to help folks who are just starting out and who might not be able to make it to Cali in September. Plus, we like to party.
So...if you're interested in participating, please let us know! Of course, everyone is invited.

as much as 'dirty south community bike shop jamboree' has the dual advantages of a catchy ring to it and useful letternym DSCBSJ, it seems to me that y'all should simply call it 'regional bikebike!'; I think that we all agree that these types of events will be growing in size and, probably, frequency, as more and more community tool spaces get set up and more and more of our comrades hear how much fun we have at conferences. This is, of course, only my opinion, but I can see no reason why regional conferences 'take away' anything from the national one. On the contrary, it could prove a useful structure for making BikeBike more effective at generating (inter)national strategy.meanwhile.... the national BikeBike! is in fairly serious need of donations, mostly b/c of the cost of doing anything in San Fransisco. Many member shops at 2007 bikebike! committed to hosting (local) fundraisers to help foot the bill. Now would be a great time to follow through on that. One model that might motivate folks is to host events at which the money generated is split b/t bikebike! and the hosting shop; then the host shop can use their half to defray the costs of travel to SF. Finally, folks who plan to attend could start registering online now ( http://www.bikebike.org/ ) AND, potentially, mail in some money to PO Box 423911 San Francisco CA USA 94142

Rachael & All,
Greetings from Arkansas! We would love to attend a more local bikebike-ish conference. The AR based bike coops were planning a group trip out to Cali this summer, but with gas prices going through the roof, a regional conference would mean more of our volunteers could participate.
Be sure to keep us informed.
Thanks

Fantastic. BikeBike South is on. Let's not clutter up this list any further. We'll get a website and a mailing list going in the next few weeks. For now, I'll keep a list of contacts going, and feel free to give my info to anyone who might be interested! Also, if you're like organizing stuff (haha..obviously) and you'd like to help on that end, please let me know.

Hey all--
I've noticed a bunch of groups out there sponsoring events that include alley cats and such. All the people I've talked to about liability have always said that we, as an entity couldn't sponsor a ride with out paying a ton for insurance. I know that some groups use bike club insurance to cover rides, but I've always assumed that most insurance companies wouldn't cover an event like an alley cat. Am I wrong?
How have you guys dealt with the issue of liability for rides and alley cats? just ignore it and hope for the best? other sneaky things? I always feel like such a stick in the mud when people want us to do alley cats and we say we can't cause of liability....

Around here (New Haven) we always just have people sign a slip of paper saying they won't hold the organizers responsible for injuries sustained while riding, and that they have full knowledge of the risks of riding on the street. Hope that helps -K

American Specialty does cheap club insurance that involves club events.
As far as orgs doing events, I think that would be a good way to do it, but more often it's just individuals putting events on, sometimes using facilities of places like the Bike Church. My model is keeping it informal and yes, hoping for the best.

Our insurance allows for legal rides (not races or illegal races). Due to the lack of route, permits, and the behavior of alley cat riders the y are usually too illegal to argue in court. So play their game....
- Make sure that the alley cat organizers are not directly affiliated with
your organization. 2) Make sure the organizers don't have a penny to their name. No house, no car, no trust fund, no wealthy parents. Because waivers mean nothing in court, the fact that someone has "nothing" is the best insurance going. 3) Structure the event like critical mass so it is hard for people to figure out who the organizers are. 4) Have those organizers donate the proceeds to your organization. "Proceeds will benefit..." 5) In the case of an incident (someone gets hit) become the most amazing support network that person has ever seen.

feels like that would ground it in the context of the greater community....and as other regions do the same thing....midwest.bikebike.org, etc....
