Registration and some other stuff
Hey folks, the new registration process in almost ready and Graham has been helping to test however it would be great to get some more feedback and suggestions for copy changes before getting the content translated into French and Spanish. You can view the screen captures once logged into the workbenchhttps://workbench.bikecollectives.org/ here: https://workbench.bikecollectives.org/apps/bikebike/pages/conferences/regist.... You can also test the process itself on the preview server here: https://preview-en.bikebike.org/
Feel free to create fake accounts, you can create as many as you like by inserting '+anything' before your email address' @ symbol. For example I might use goodgodwin+test1@hotmail.com, or goodgodwin+somethingelse@hotmail.com, any emails I get will be sent to goodgodwin@hotmail.com.
A few things to keep in mind:
* PayPal payments are set up and will charge your account if you make one * Admin tools need some updates, don't expect these to work right now but they will be working by the time you need to use them * Questions are different depending on your answers, for example, you will be asked if you can house attendees but not be asked if you need housing if you enter your location as Winnipeg
Feel free to email me feedback, discuss it here, or comment on the workbench. If you feel like making copy changes you can also do this on the workbench in the English translations or just send me the changes that you'd like to see.
Front page
* Can we get an updated image for the poster? The one on the site is low resolution and fairly grainy. * The language on the description contains several obscenities. Although most attendees wouldn't bat an eye at this I would suggest modifying this as there will be people of all ages and faiths that may attend and may be offended by this language. In addition, there will be people travelling internationally and the language may make the conference appear less legitimate to border security or organizations helping to fund travel. * When can we expect to get a Spanish translation for the conference description? I can help by contacting Spanish translators if you need help with this * I plan to break up the conference description into more sections so that we can reduce the content on the front page and make extended details available on the conference details page. Does anyone have any issues with this?
Regarding English copy, would it be better for me to work one-on-one with someone? Would someone like to volunteer to do this?
Cheers!
Godwin
Hey folks, I haven't heard back from anyone on any of this yet, I am going to need your help to get registration launched.
The one thing I really need and can only get from you is a higher quality version of the poster, can someone send it to me or update it themselves? Everything else I'll do what I can to move forward anyway:
I'm going to reach out to the thinktank to get help with testing and copy, I'm also going to go ahead and make changes to the copy on the front page, including the removal of profanity since this may cause issues for those applying for grants or answering questions to immigration. Please let me know if you have issues with this, my intention is not to cause friction here and I'm very open to discussing this further.
I'm also going to reach out to the Spanish translators I know to try to get content translated.
Graham, the updates we talked about are now on the preview site, I know you're in Chicago but if you have a chance to check out the changes please let me know if anything is missing or if there are further changes that you would like to see.
Cheers, Godwin

Hi all, Sorry about my neglect on this as well! Juggling a lot right now but I'll try to test it out tonight.

UI bug:
*Map Scrolling:* I'm working on a mac laptop computer, When I go to https://preview-en.bikebike.org/conferences/ I just stuck strolling through the map (zooming in and out) I am unable to scroll down to see the rest of the content, (attached screen shot)
my fix is to change the zoom on the whole page to make the map smaller, so I can click on the other sections of the web page. But this might not be obvious to everyone.
*Registration Button:* The registration button is all the way at the bottom of the conference text. It's not obvious at all. It should likely be on the first view of the webpage.
Maybe Bug:
*The info from my registration is not reflected on the site.* I added a workshop, and added my org. But I do not see my workshop nor do I see my org on the map. Does it take a while?
Thanks Momoko, I agree about the map but I'm going to put that off until after registration is open since it's not a blocker.
I'm going to first reduce the amount of info on the home page and only show extended details when the user clicks details, but I agree, I'll look into a good way of adding a link or a button before the poster.
I see you workshop under all the all workshops page, it should also show up on the registration review page under "Your workshops" I'll look into this a little more later. The map is a map of conferences, not organizations. I'll be working on the new bikecollectives.org site after Bike!Bike! where we will show the map with organizations we collected during registration this year. Maybe the language I used was a little misleading?

Your wording is fine. I just made wild assumptions when I saw the map. I didn't even really read anything cause I quickly became focused on scrolling.
From a UI point of view, it's odd that I can see the conference details
from the front page, but there's not an obvious way to see the workshop details unless you go to conferences tab, and then click the Winnipeg one and then scroll to the bottom., https://preview-en.bi kebike.org/conferences/Winnipeg2017/
Maybe you'll link to them in the conference summary on the first page?
Not a blocker by any means,
I went through registration with out a hitch, even pressed back buttons and canceled and choose irrational things. I also went through it as an normal person and was surprised by how predictive it was. I did make some strings run off the page by making them super long. Probably won't be an issue, but it could be if someone posts a super long URL.
I felt unsure when it was over. Maybe a quick thank you. But also, not a stopper.
Again, not a stopper, but I could create a workshop after canceling my registration. Maybe that's fine. I could not see workshops unless logged in. and I did not get an email when I commented on the workshop since my registration is canceled.
I hope this random assortment of scenarios shows that I tested a bunch of things and never got stuck, 404'd, or confronted with odd super odd behaviour.
Is there anything else you'd like me to specifically test.
I'm sorry I can't help with language. -m

Ok, pronoun question is up, please give some feedback on this copy or UX if you can:
[cid:951ceb1f-df31-4c16-bc1e-e5a56bbfcf9d]
I also added a confirmation message at the end of registration:
[cid:eccbd670-dd0d-4af3-a507-70327c069ab8]
I updated the prod site so you can now download previous years' registration data from the statistics page but I removed user names and emails. Data was different in previous years so there may be data missing, please let me know if this is useful.
Thanks! Godwin

I was able to access the preview site and the registration questions seem to be good now. For translation of changes into Spanish, if you can reach out to those who have done it in the past, that would be great. The organizing group had a quick discussion about asking about pronouns, and we would still rather include the question, though not if it holds up getting registration open.

but they will be working by the time you need to use them
- Questions are different depending on your answers, for example, you
will be asked if you can house attendees but not be asked if you need housing if you enter your location as Winnipeg
Feel free to email me feedback, discuss it here, or comment on the workbench. If you feel like making copy changes you can also do this on the workbench in the English translations or just send me the changes that you'd like to see.
*Front page*
- Can we get an updated image for the poster? The one on the site is
low resolution and fairly grainy.
- The language on the description contains several obscenities.
Although most attendees wouldn't bat an eye at this I would suggest modifying this as there will be people of all ages and faiths that may attend and may be offended by this language. In addition, there will be people travelling internationally and the language may make the conference appear less legitimate to border security or organizations helping to fund travel.
- When can we expect to get a Spanish translation for the conference
description? I can help by contacting Spanish translators if you need help with this
- I plan to break up the conference description into more sections so
that we can reduce the content on the front page and make extended details available on the conference details page. Does anyone have any issues with this?
Regarding English copy, would it be better for me to work one-on-one with someone? Would someone like to volunteer to do this?
Cheers!

Thanks Graham, I'm looking into with's going on on bikebike.org right now and expect it to be worked out in the next 30 minutes, but in the meantime if you want to make copy changes to the preview site I can copy it over later. I also looked into the workbench (if that's what you meant), I'm getting confirmation emails there, I'm not sure why you're not.
Let's talk about the pronoun option a little more today, it should be quick to implement but it's complicated to come up with a good solution. I think the question should be added to the name step and should be optional, there are some people who attend who will still be figuring this out for themselves and others who might not be completely 'woke' to the concept and might get confused (I would hope that this would be a good learning ground for them).
Our first option would be to let the user select from a predefined list (he/she/they/...), we would need to decide on that list now and hope that it works for all participants. Will he, she, and they be sufficient? Does "They" translate well into French and Spanish?
The second option would be to let the user enter whatever they want, this would ensure that the user gets what they want. However, how do we deal with French and Spanish speakers? In fact, how will you deal with pronouns on name tags themselves with non-English speakers? Both "Rosa María (She)" nor "Rosa María (Ella)" would be confusing, non-Spanish speakers may think her name is Ella, non-English speakers won't know what "(She)" means, leaving back at option 1 and we would then need to write "Rosa María (She/Ella/Elle)".
I am not against this idea, I'm just not sure there is a good workable solution yet but I would love to have a deeper discussion on the subject. What does everyone else think? Can someone see an easy way to make this work? What is your plan for including pronouns for non-English speakers on name tags?
Thanks everyone! Godwin

I was able to access the preview site and the registration questions seem to be good now. For translation of changes into Spanish, if you can reach out to those who have done it in the past, that would be great. The organizing group had a quick discussion about asking about pronouns, and we would still rather include the question, though not if it holds up getting registration open.

Ok,
I received the workbench email after a little delay.
A couple people weighed in on our pronoun question discussion. We will not be pre-printing name tags and will let people do their own. Yes it should be an optional question. Forgot to mention that. The language thing is more difficult, but If it is an open question rather than checkbox, dropdown, etc I think it will work ok.
In regards to language more generally, it seems to me that the working language of BB except likely Guadalajara has been english. While many people attending speak spanish, or other first languages, nearly all have basic proficiency in english.

You're right, the language has generally defaulted to English out of necessity but making that assumption for native Spanish and French speakers can often be offensive, plus you will get this data in Spanish and French anyway as users will register in these languages, will you translate it back to English?
If you are not using them for name tags, how are you using this data?

1. Normalize the question and get people thinking about it in advance. A lot of time is spent in workshops discussing this and introducing the concept of gender neutral language and pronouns and maybe this can advance that discussion.
2. The only specific case where we would use it is communicating with hosts prior to the conference. I'm aware this works differently in the grammatically gendered languages of French and Spanish, but I expect we could translate to he,she, they most of the time or send a follow up email if unsure.
3. Basically, we are saying.... this matters, we care enough to ask.
3. If you are convinced that it is going to be too complicated, we should leave it off.

Coming late to this thread, I plan to test today after work.
Fill in the blank sounds like a good option. Especially since there are a ton of pronouns.
I think it's great to put the question on the form. Maybe in the future there can be a sort of hover over to see an explanation of the question, like we have for notes (see attached ScreenShot) But this can be later. I'm definitely not trying to add more work. But it would behoove us to consider the explantation for the question. I will try to think of some draft language that others can build on.
I also just wanted to note that this is an interesting conversation and might make a good talk for this year BB, or part of a larger talk.
Thanks for all the work so far. This is going to be a great BikeBike!

Although most attendees wouldn't bat an eye at this I would suggest modifying this as there will be people of all ages and faiths that may attend and may be offended by this language. - I plan to break up the conference description into more sections

Alight, French and Spanish translations are now complete. The site is updated so anyone with admin access can launch registration when ready, I would recommend the following first:
* Run through the registration process again on the preview site, especially in French and Spanish for those who speak it: * English: https://preview-en.bikebike.org/ * French: https://preview-fr.bikebike.org/ * Spanish: https://preview-es.bikebike.org/ * Sign off by replying to this list and letting everyone know which language you tested and if you found any issues * Once we're ready, open registration but before announcing it to everyone, let's all register on the real site ourselves * In a day or so, once we have all completed registration and verified there were no issues, let everyone know by: * Emailing the think tank * Posting on the Facebook group * Using the mass emailer in the bikebike admin tools to email everyone who has registered in previous years

Hi Godwin, I'm in Chicago and will not regularly have internet access again until Monday. I do this morning and I can't get logged in to change the front page text, or logged in to the test bench, as I am not receiving the confirmation email.

Cheers!
Godwin

I have tested english and my friend Sarah registered in Spanish. We found some issues, but nothing major to hold up opening registration. I'll be back in WPG and at a computer Tuesday AM, and will plan to open reg then.
Bugs: Email address entry should be mandatory - possible to click continue on an empty field Confirmation link for spanish registration directed to english page Registration complete message is showing up on all pages at the bottom
User interface: Safe space policy doesn't actually say to check off boxes Arrival and departure dates question would make more sense after housing question Be clearer about dates housing is available for - 3 weeks? Eating habits: no option includes meat but not dairy - maybe mention that allergies/restrictions will be asked about later On paypal/pledge pages - Pay another amount button is unclear On confirmation page : mention confirmation email and option to change details later. On production site: clicking details to get other sections is quite unclear from user POV. Ideally, the sections titles should be shown as links
Suggestion: put higher registration $ amounts first.
Language EN: Pronoun -> pronouns plural ES: Double check spanish gender neutral translation - plural ellxs in title? o ellos' in description text (should be same) Should gender neutral be used throughtout ie. idiomas hablas - obligado->obligadx Hospedaje: both x and () are used
Minor Todo: Register button moved/duplcated to top of page List text on mobile is too large and line spacing is off.

I'm going to be honeymooning in the Boston area for the next week or so, I'm flying out tomorrow and I'll be back on the west coast a week from Tuesday. I'm bringing my computer and I expect to be launching registration from there but I'm not going to be able to dedicate extended amounts of time. You'll still be able to contact me through email or phone (206-327-3772tel:(206)%20327-3772) so please feel free to do so.
Cheers, godwin

It looks like I might have to work an event in Detroit and be unable to attend this year, but fingers crossed I can get covered! Leslie

Hi Godwin, I'm in Chicago and will not regularly have internet access again until Monday. I do this morning and I can't get logged in to change the front page text, or logged in to the test bench, as I am not receiving the confirmation email.

Cheers!
Godwin

Yeah, the welcome page, conference details (including translations), and conference date are all entered in the conference admin area, I haven't matched up the data between the two sites but when we launch it will use the content that lives on the real site now.
If you register first on the French site, you should get your email in French. Your account was probably created before French was an option and was marked as English. I'll work on improving that at some point but for now this shouldn't block registration.
You click "+1" to add interest and "-1" to remove it. I've been thinking about how to improve the interest feature for a while now, I know it's a little confusing. You should see "You are interested in this workshop [-1]" which I think should give you enough context to get by. If I come up with a better idea while registration is still open, I'll try to change it.
That said, I don't see anything blocking us from opening up registration from these notes. I hope that all makes sense, I know it's a little confusing to have some data shared between the test and real sites and some of it be different, if I had the time I would sync them up now.

Thanks Leslie, I set up the test conference with the wrong dates but the real one has the right ones. I hope I get to see you this year!
So here's where we are right now: all we're really waiting on is translations, Luisa, Maybe, and Eric, have been working hard on this and it's really close to being done. We're at 91% for French and 98% for Spanish. I also had a volunteer copy-writer go through the English and make some edits which look good to me.
I'm going to be honeymooning in the Boston area for the next week or so, I'm flying out tomorrow and I'll be back on the west coast a week from Tuesday. I'm bringing my computer and I expect to be launching registration from there but I'm not going to be able to dedicate extended amounts of time. You'll still be able to contact me through email or phone (206-327-3772 <(206)%20327-3772>) so please feel free to do so.
Cheers, godwin

The website looks really good! The topics are well organized and thorough. I haven't had a chance to pretend to register, alas. The page I am seeing says April instead of August at the top, tho...

Hey folks, the new registration process in almost ready and Graham has been helping to test however it would be great to get some more feedback and suggestions for copy changes before getting the content translated into French and Spanish. You can view the screen captures once logged into the workbench https://workbench.bikecollectives.org/ here: https://workbench.bikecollectives.org/apps/b ikebike/pages/conferences/register.
- PayPal payments are set up and will charge your account if you
make one
- Admin tools need some updates, don't expect these to work right
now but they will be working by the time you need to use them
- Questions are different depending on your answers, for example,
you will be asked if you can house attendees but not be asked if you need housing if you enter your location as Winnipeg
Feel free to email me feedback, discuss it here, or comment on the workbench. If you feel like making copy changes you can also do this on the workbench in the English translations or just send me the changes that you'd like to see.
*Front page*
- Can we get an updated image for the poster? The one on the site
is low resolution and fairly grainy.
- When can we expect to get a Spanish translation for the
conference description? I can help by contacting Spanish translators if you need help with this
- I plan to break up the conference description into more sections
so that we can reduce the content on the front page and make extended details available on the conference details page. Does anyone have any issues with this?
Regarding English copy, would it be better for me to work one-on-one with someone? Would someone like to volunteer to do this?
Cheers!

I've opened registration on the production site and tested there.
I did not get asked the questions about dietary habits or other accommodations when I registered as a housing provider also attending the conference
Aside from this and the list of minor issues above, looks good to go.
Feel free to register on the actual site. If it is a test registration and you are not actually attending, please indicate this somewhere.

Hi Godwin!
To be more specific :P..
- Welcome page is not completely translated. We see titles but not
content.
- When I confirm the link from my email, it goes directly to the english
webpage (even if I begun in french).
The calender is still in april.
This page is still in english: post ride
When I have the list of presentations, when I click on ''+1'' to show
my interest, it will change to ''-1''.
That's it! The rest is great! Thank you for you hard work :)!

Depends on what it is. If it's content on the conference description then that is expected. If you're seeing content that looks wrong during registration, then we should take a closer look.

Hi! I registered in french. Everything is good, except that it seems to be a old version of the website. Translation is not done everywhere and correction dont appear. Is it normal?
