I liked using the one I made in the shop because it showed how reusable things are if you think about them outside of how they were designed. Plus you can bang it around and not sweat too much since it's made of trash and not a $300 pro shop stand.
Re: Welders: it's definitely worth another thread but I bow to the expertise of others on the list when it comes to welding info.
I've taken a class and can identify the different types and know a little about what they do but don't have any outside-of-class experience at all.

josh, perhaps a separate tread, would you recommend the best welding set up you could think of to turn these kind of scale projects out all the time?

If you have two people working on it, you'll want to weight the BMX bars down with something, especially if they're both working on drive train stuff and using the pedals. A milk crate full of freewheels works great.

Cut the dropouts and bottoms off of the fork. The fork will "live" upside down in the finished stand. Seat one stem in each of the forks. Adjust the bars so they're upside down and will cradle the top tube of a frame. Tighten bolts, etc.
If you have a stem that matches the BMX/MTN fork, you can use it to attach the stand to a horizontal bar if it's the correct diameter.
You can also build a freestanding base that's basically the same setup but with BMX bars splayed out almost horizontal so that each grip is one of four "feet" and the base is wide enough to support a bike without being unstable. The only tricky part is connected the two opposing steerer tubes. I used a length of top tube from a discarded frame plus some through bolts. There might be a better way.
I built one of these years ago and it took a couple hours. With more hands helping, it would be much faster. It would definitely add some fun bike flavor to the space and be useful.
And it goes without saying that putting this in an open area where tools live and are accessible leaves it open that someone could come and disassemble it. Spot welding it together once assembled would help.
