London's strategies?
Hi Everyone, I recently saw this article- London is set to have more bicycles than cars coming into the city at rush hour in the next few years. They cut their car entry by half in 15 years! What strategies did they use? Anyone from there who could comment more or send more articles?

Also, some years ago there started to be a surcharge on vehicles driving into central London each day. I'm not sure of it's current status though.

The congestion charge played a big part in it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_congestion_charge That came in in 2003, so their 15-year timescale is almost certainly meant to correspond with that.
The fact that their (conservative and right-wing) mayor is very pro-bike and dedicated a billion pounds to cycling infrastructure has likely helped too. http://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Mayor-of-London-to-Invest-...
It's nice when bike infrastructure is just considered to be a good thing by politicians, and not a right-wing wedge issue.
It's also worth noting that London did most of its growing as a city before automobiles, so the streets are pretty narrow and car-unfriendly (a good thing in my opinion).

There's also a really effective, active, 11,000-member cycle campaigning organisation in London, the LCC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Cycling_Campaign & http://lcc.org.uk/
They campaign on loads of cycling-issues, and work with the city admistrators at various levels.

Another interesting thing about London is that, in a slightly horrifying show of neoliberalism, Boris got Barclays Bank to sponsor (corporate branded) bike lanes.
