glueing inner tubes together?
does anyone know what a good glue or cement would be for gluing inner tubes together? i'm working on a diy design for waterproof shoe covers, but can't find any glue that will bond the rubber like a patch kit seems to...i'd like them to be as bomber as possible, as i'm pretty sure they'll get used and abused.
thanks!
josh.
Thistothat.com Or maybe .ca I can't remember. But they are a couple researchers who study adhesives. Maybe it'll help.

patch kits use vulcanizinig fluid, not glue. or at least thats what we use in our shop for bulk patching of tubes.
you need to allow vulcanizing fluid to dry before applying the patch. not so with glues.
glues need to be wet when you apply the things to be attached. vulcanizing fluid needs to be dry.

There is also a coating on the rubber. You might get better results if you can remove the coating. That is what the sandpaper is for when patching a tire.

So what is wrong with patching glue? you can buy it in haft pint and pint jars or even larger amounts if you (forgive me) go to an auto tire repair supply outfits. at the kitchen we have a quart can of Camel brand tube patch cleaner stuff that is used in place of sanding This stuff is nasty chemical terror but would be most effective for the sort of thing your talking about . On another note (it wont be water proof) but I once saw a dress made of inertubes, it was sewn with the tubes running parallel this might work for the rugged part with fat tubes splaied and glued on for the water seal. List- Based on my limited patch experimental experience, I don't think you should used adhesive but instead, as with James' example of the dress, sew them.
I tried to use old tubes as patches themselves, but it wouldn't work. so I imagine that a softer material (i.e. the patch) is needed. I would also look to all the other bike products out in the market to see if indeed I am wrong and some manufacturers have bonded tubes to make larger sheets of tubes.
I reccomend sewing and using some glue/chemical to make the seams waterproof.

The crux is the cleaning ! When one cuts open a tube we find varying amounts talc. This white powder prevents the tube from sticking to its self. It will also interfere with attempts to glue tubes to tubes. So decontaminating our tube rubber is crucial. In the case we consider here scrubbing with soap and water is the first step I would undertake. After the tube rubber is dry examine for talc residue scrub again if necessary. I have always used sand paper to clean the tube before applying the glue which as was stated earlier we must allow to dry and needs to be very thin. As for the sewing idea that is for high stress portions of the project. and then glue on tube sheets to the seams. Jim P.S. Hi Ed

I sew tubes. A word or caution! our shop has found that many domestic sewing machines are unable to do the job. The rubber catches in the feed dogs. Some people use waxed paper and then cut it out afterwards. I am able, somehow, to sew the tubes without this happening -on the whole. If I go for too much fine precision, it becomes a problem. It does tend to cause bad tension, though, and is not the neatest sewing job. I actually find that the talc is beneficial as it allows for some of the friction to be reduced between the tune and feed dogs.
