Examples Of Your Public Advocacy Campaigns
Hello ThinkTank'ers,
In order to broaden our efforts in education and advocacy efforts I am soliciting for examples of the types of campaigns you've been successful (and unsuccessful) with as well as the message you were trying to drive home. Keep it short, keep it simple, or if you want to wax poetic I'm happy to read a lengthy treatise as well.
- Campaign type (e-mail, workshop, radio/tv PSA, poster, tradeshow booth,
et al) 2. What was the message you were trying to convey (safe riding techniques, helmet use, bike lights, share the road, etc) 3. Was a measurable goal in the message/campaign's success defined and if so how was it measured? 4. What city, state, country are you from?

Bicycle Longmont added $10 to tickets issued as a result of a moving violation. This affects bikes, motorists, motorcyclists etc. The money can be used for traffic safety education including bike education programs and classes. It cannot be used for staff time or projects. We modeled it after a program in Fort Collins CO, they added $35 to tickets.
The Longmont fund is accumulating about $3,000/month. Fort Collins collects north of $350,000 to $400,000 per year.

We're going to be creating a whole set of toolkits for organizations to use (free, I believe). Circle back and follow up with me sometime next year for a whole suite of campaigns (safety oriented, mainly).

I'm interested in these kinds of efforts also. The Rockville Bike Hub is just getting off the ground, but as part of the Rockville Bike Advisory Group I've been interested in promoting more education. I've been trying to write some short articles (like ~200 words) that could go into local papers or pamphlets and websites. Work and other things have stalled this, but it is still something I want to get done.
I feel this is a weakness in advocacy and has lead to some well intentioned, but poorly implemented encouragement and facility projects. IMHO, if all of the money that was put into bike facilities over the last 30 years had gone into education we might not need the facilities to encourage people to ride or to make them feel safe.

That's really funny! I think nearly the opposite! We can educate people all we want, but most of the people that I talk to don't want to be in the road with cars. If we can create safe places for people to walk and bike, they'll be more likely to make that choice. Of course, we still need to teach them that the choice is available, and how to be safe while making that choice. So, there's definitely a *big* place for education and awareness, but people won't use that education if they don't feel safe.
That said, I am VERY happy to share what we have--I have rough drafts of the toolkits. Send me a separate e-mail, and I'll get them to you.
