at-risk youth starting a community bike shop?
Hi there,
I work with at-risk youth in a rural northern community and yesterday as I was tossing my sea foam green toilet at the dump I saw at least 6 bikes. I have been looking for something to engage some of my kids and I started thinking about bike-cycling/community shops etc. I feel that this is a really worthwhile project I just have no idea how to go about starting off - so I am looking for support - I am going to check the lists and see what advice is there, then I am going to start networking within my community. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!

No great wisdom to share -- we are just starting out ourselves -- but engaging at-risk kids is a big part of our motivation! Check out westtownbikes.org -- they are a big inspiration to us. Good luck! Nozomi

I would go one of two approaches. Either tack on to another organisation and work through them for financing and stuff, or just get some of the basic tools a stand and some basic knowledge (to the internet!). If you do the later be sure that you have a regular time and place that you are meeting, like monday/wed 4pm at the elementary school parking lot. eventually people will start helping put and the project will gain traction.
the tacking on to another organisation is great for starting up but with already established entities there is much bureaucracy already in the mix.
just my thoughts

For people looking to start up youth bike programs, check out Recycle-A-Bicycle's "Tools for Life: A Start-Up Guide for Youth Recycling & Bicycling Programs". It can be accessed (and downloaded/printed if you wish) free of charge from the "youth programs" page on our website. You'll find the link in the lower left corner of this page: http://www.recycleabicycle.org/youth-programs
If any of you are interested in starting youth biking programs, our other publication "One Revolution at a Time: A Guide to Starting and Running Youth Ride Clubs" can also be accessed from the same place.
I hope this helps!

Hi Allyson,
I'm a bike mechanic at a non-profit community bike shop. Here is the link:
http://www.wrwc.org/gwyRedShed.php
It is amazing the supply and different sources for bikes. I guess my first advice is to hold onto the vision of such a place for the kids. Find others in the cycling/renewalable/green community who may be willing to join you. Are there any bike organizations or even bike shops nearby? It would be a great help to obtain the volunteer services of a bike mechanic. There is a wealth of info on line about bikes.
Good Luck!

Allyson, my advice would be to be prepared for an overwhelming response. In our first three months we were given over 400 bikes so have a place to collect them. Local bike shops are a great source for used parts. Ron

A couple of things. There seems to be a few of us going to Interbike. It would be great to meet some of you. Can we come up with a place to hook and shoot the breeze.
The other thing, it would be great to have a directory and map of the organizations that are part of this. As I travel around the country I would love to stop by and check things out. Pictures of all the bike shop/kitchens would be cool too. I guess that would mean a website, huh? Just a thought

Mark,
The Bike Collective Wiki maintains a list of bike collectives, world-wide! The US collectives are listed here:
http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Community_Bicycle_Organi...
Per this discussion, the Wiki also has a number of "starter kits" and other resources for new collectives with lots of valuable information, available here:
http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Starter_Kits
And as always, the Wiki exists via collective collaboration -- anyone can edit and contribute!
Best, D.

Hi Allyson,
I'm the coordinator for an organization called Charlie's FreeWheels ( charliesfreewheels.ca) in Toronto -- I'd be happy to talk about some our trials and tribulations with opening an youth-led bike shop -- feel free to give me a call at the shop (416-456-2200) and we can have a chat. There are a few odd rules, especially with Canada Revenue Agency to look out for -- we found it difficult to mediate the charitable aspects of our mission with the profitable aspects.
I would really encourage you to take a look at a document on line: http://www.enterprisingnonprofits.ca/projects/the_guide/
Planning goes a long way!

Katherine,
I am in Orange County and the ED of Build Futures. We are an all volunteer organization helping homeless youth 18 to 24. We started our social enterprise Bikes Build Futures to create jobs for the homeless kids while we try to get them jobs.
We would love any suggestions or best practices to get to profitability. We get donated bikes, pay the kids to work on them then sell them to get the money to pay the kids and purchase parts and pay for fixed costs.
I could not get through on the phone number in the email.
Thank you!
