Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL.
But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down.
So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.)
Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way.
Anyway, please help. It's rough to find time to FTP an update and find the site's down.
Thanks,

I believe you can get free hosting through the BCN. Jonathan from Salt Lake will know for sure, I'm sure he'll chime in here.
Also if you're moving the site I highly recommend running it on Joomla!

DreamHost does free hosting, but you may have to be a 501c3. It's sometimes slow to upload, but not bad.
Also, some web development type companies host employee sites, or sites for orgs they like. So if you have any members that work for webby firms, you might have them ask about this.
We run our site on Drupal - which I highly recommend.

Hi Folks,
Reviving an old thread: We now have a URL, PigeonRiverBikes.org and are looking for reliable, budget web hosting. Any suggestions? My own business site is with A2Hosting and they have been fine to work with, though not the cheapest.
Thanks and good health, Weogo

Cloud flare is the best registrar. What sort of site? I highly recommend doing something static so that free hosts like GitHub pages work.

Hi Alex,
We have the URL registered at namecheap.com. Before we renew, I'll look at cloudflare.
What does static mean? No animated GIFs? What are the benefits and challenges with using GitHub for hosting?
We're ok with paying for lower-cost server space, as long as it's reliable.
Thanks and good health, Weogo

Static means that you don't fetch data from a server. For example, users don't log in - the site like the same for all users. Another example: If you have a calendar of events, you update it by updating the site itself, vs the page asking the server for the list.
I know it's a subtle distinction, apologies if it's confusing.
Images, even videos are still "static" because all users see the same thing.
Basically - how was the site made?

Worth looking into for the 501c3 orgs out there is Dreamhost's free hosting plan:

Hi Sam,
We have applied for 501C3 status, don't know how long it will take to get the determination letter.
Any preference for DreamHost or GitHub?
Alex, thanks for the static clarification! The website will be pretty simple and static.
Thanks and good health, Weogo

I have not personally used Github Pages. Dreamhost is a fully-featured web host much like a million others out there. We use Wordpress for our site which was easy to deploy initially and is then super easy to edit and update by our shop staff who may or may not have any know-how in that department.

Andrea,
I contacted you off-list with a hosting --I host a few local non-profits and our bike coop and would be more than happy to let you use our account for your site too (no ethnic hacking involved -- each site uses a seperate administrative login).
Its usually best to avoid a large CMS (Joomla/Drupal) until you need it, or it would benefit you. For a simple small site it will be more cumbersome than its worth. Wordpress or simple HTML is much more appropriate for a small site. If you need multiple levels of editing security -- then its time to break out the big CMS's.
