TW - Death . . . . Hello,
My boyfriend's best friend was just killed as she was starting a bike trip across the country.
I'd like to get in touch with people who could help in setting up a ghost bike for her.
More info: https://bc.ctvnews.ca/cyclist-killed-in-maple-ridge-was-beginning-cross-coun...
Thank you in advance <3
Gabrielle
So sorry to read this sad news. OCBC has painted many ghost bikes, several for Sylvia Bingham http://sylviabinghamfund.org/, whose parents are a real inspiration for how to deal with deep sadness most proactively.
Take your time, and use good paint, and several coats. Glossy is nice. A rushed sloppy job looks like a bike stolen by clueless kids. Choose a non-cloth seat that will take paint well.
Take the pedals off, or the chain, and probably lock it (as inconspicuously as possible) or it will get stolen eventually. We replace Sylvia's ghost bike each year before the anniversary of her death, when her parents come to town and organize a ride to the site.
Lay the bike on one side, let dry, then do the other. There will be lots of overspray. I have painted the bike in the street near the site, which made a reverse-image bike on the roadway, perhaps a bit too scary.
My condolences to your friends, Jim Jim Sheehan Executive Director Ohio City Bicycle Co-op 1840 Columbus Rd Cleveland, Ohio 44113 216 830 2667 OhioCityCycles.org jim@ohiocitycycles.org

Hi Gabrielle,
I'm so sorry to hear this. Jesse at Our Community Bikes would likely be a good resource. I believe the idea it that friends and loved ones take the initiative to find, paint, and dedicate the bike, and contact the municipality to inform them of your intent and troubleshoot any possible safety issues with placement. Likely any community bike shop will have a bike you can have for this purpose if you do not wish/are unable to use her bike (everyone is different about what feels appropriate). Sending you much tenderness.
With condolences, Lauren

Thank you all for your answers. To clarify: she was from Montreal and starting a bike trip across the country. I’m therefore trying to organize a ceremony from Montreal with no contacts locally. I do know how to set up ghost bikes as I’m also the organizer of those ceremonies when cyclists are killed here.
Lauren: I’d love the contact information for Jesse. Have you got their email?

Hey friends, This saddens me and my condolences to family and friends.
Because of the pandemic and my partner's health conditions I'm unable to physically facilitate any action on this work. Currently still distancing/isolating especially in light of our local community experiencing a recent upswing of infections. However if any needs are to be met remotely, I'm keen to help. Sunny, Lauren, thanks for reaching out, but I haven't been part of OCB since March.

Heya,
My condolences. I'm very sorry for your loss Gabrielle.
Thanks for reaching out Johanna. Not sure how much I can do, but I'd be happy to help out. It was a whole team of very talented people that worked on our fellow volunteer, Mike's white bike, I just mostly coordinated.
We still have a spray can in the Kickstand office, since I was there last. Yours, if you need it, I don't think anyone would mind. We used Krylon flat white. It took us 3 1/4 cans to cover a 54cm road bike (road bikes were Mike's prefered ride), 3 coats and 2 cans of krylon clear coat on top.
I don't know if this is useful at all, but for anti-theft purposes, we removed all of the main bearings, bolted the wheels down, seized the freewheel, used solid non-numatic white tires, took out the clipless rails on the spd pedals and made a very official memorial plaque for the main triangle with a QR code, that goes to a webpage dedicated to Mike.
Feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions.
-Ari Vancouver Community Bikeshop Network.

Quick, simple request:
anytime you snip off the extra length of a zip tie, please melt the end of the remaining part because othewise it is like a little razor blade!
It only takes a second to wave a lit match over the end of that snipped end to make it harmless.
(I just zoomed in on the beautiful pic of the ghost bike recently posted and could see the razor end of the zip tie)
thanks!!
Bob Giordano, free cycles missoula, mist
You can also use a file to blunt the cut end!
When removing zip ties, I can *usually* use a pick or tiny flat screwdriver to lift the ratchet inside and actually undo the whole thing without cutting. Usually it's re-usable (although likely less strong), so I have a bucket of used zip ties from shipping that I use for random jobs. Even if this is not possible, if the zip tie is around something large-ish, if you cut on the correct side of the buckle, you can re-use it for anything smaller. It's a bit of a sarcastic "life hack" but it's a good trick to know.

I’ll just add: I’ve found that a lot of things for which people grab zip ties can be secured with judicious and creative use of tubes-turned-rubber bands.

It only takes a second to wave a lit match over the end of that snipped end to make it harmless.
(I just zoomed in on the beautiful pic of the ghost bike recently posted and could see the razor end of the zip tie)
thanks!!

using nail clippers instead of side cutters or cable cutters will give you a perfectly flush end. im not sure if they leave a sharp edge but since the dont protrude it doesnt matter much.

Another option is to use successively finer grits of sandpaper after cutting with a fresh boxcutter razor. You could start with, say, 120 grit and end with 400-450 or so. Afterward, blow on it very gently to make sure the end is completely free of debris. At this point, applying some oil to soften the end further will

For stuff that does not need to be tight (eg pairing salvaged pedals) we use spoke carabiners. Bent carefully into a small loop that the spoke head sits in, the nipple makes a locking device that is super strong. Will post a video link when we get that how-to guide made. Alternatively (since burning plastic isn't great), if you take care to ensure that you're cutting off the ends of your zip ties directly straight across (at a 90-degree angle to the tie itself) then it doesn't have the chance to become razor-sharp! If you're teaching young'uns, it's a really good thing to ensure that they do to get them into the habit of it.
