we recently faced the issue of one of our core volunteers getting injured in the shop. when the time came to decide about a trip to the hospital it became apparent that the person did not have insurance and could not afford the trip. have other shops faced this situation? do you (the shop) pay for or help pay for medical expenses. the trip would have run anywhere form $300 to $1000. is there a limit that folks have decided on? is it a process of reimbursement? do any shops have insurance that cover such things? any input would be much appreciated.

By SC, do you mean Santa Cruz? Are you the fellow I used to cover for so you could go get vegetables sometimes? I'm glad they're paying you now!
Here in Davis, bike valet parking happens, but rarely. The campus has some lightweight racks and the city has some heavy-duty racks, and they lend 'em out. Both the Davis Bike Collective and Davis Bicycles! have borrowed them, but it's kind of an ordeal so they only come out for big occasions.
I think of Bike Valet Parking as a way to get folks aware of various bike organizations.

An insurance policy would cover something like this, although your shop would probably be out of pocket anyway because the deductible would likely be within that price range.
While our insurance doesn't have to deal directly with health care costs (the whole Canada thing...), our policy does have coverage for the things that would basically destroy any organization: death & dismemberment coverage, as well as legal liability protection up to $2 million dollars.
If you're curious about insurance, the best thing I can suggest is find some shops nearby who have solicited insurance already. It helps a lot if the agent knows what this whole bike thing is about. Our quote dropped almost $2k when we spoke to an agent who was familiar with bike co-ops (thanks, Bike Sauce!)

Hi-
From both an ethical and legal perspective, you may be liable for such
injuries. Additionally, there may be a statutory requirement with your state requiring that organizations such as yours render emergency assistance. You may also have insurance (umbrella, general liability, or premises liability) which may cover it. If you don't have this coverage, you should, as it is a cost of doing business and a way to manage these unpredictable expenses.
Regardless, an organization that does not see to prompt medical attention for a non-tresspasser injured on their premises is asking for trouble. Always encourage people to adopt a conservative attitude toward risk in these situations, by accommodating and encouraging all reasonable emergency care. With respect to emergency care, figure out how to pay for it later.

Can't offer much that would be useful to your situation, but our Canadian perspective is:
- We're in Alberta, Canada. Individuals have to pay for their own
ambulance trips if they call one (although many people have non-profit insurance coverage for that), but our healthcare system covers the rest. 2. We have $5 million general liability. That covers us against lawsuits where our organization is likely at fault. It's about $1000/yr to cover the majority of our activities, including our workshop. 3. We also pay into voluntary workers' compensation for our shop volunteers. The cost varies with the number of volunteer hours, but is around $600. It provides loss-of-pay compensation to our volunteers should they be injured while volunteering at our shop.

Hey All, Does anyone have some innovative solutions to spoke sorting and storage? Does anyone have some innovative solutions to spoke sorting and storage?
Here's a photo of the solution the Bicycle Kitchen in Los Angeles has come up with for spoke storage:

We use library card catalog drawers (bought from UC Davis) for all small parts, including spokes.

I made this thing which I call Spokeville (all our storage areas are some sort of ville) for BikeWorks in Edmonton. It works pretty well. It's basically just ABS piping cut to the length of the spoke and mounted on a piece of plywood that sits in a milk carton. The beauty of it is that because each individual tube is the length of the spoke it stores its fairly easy to tell if the spoke is in the wrong place.

http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Part_Storage
I have always loved Freeride's Wheel Sorter " http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Shop_Organization#Wheel_..." mainly because it attacks the problem from a different angle. Instead of asking, how can we best store X part? It addresses the bigger issue and asks, "given that not all volunteers / customers know what they are doing and WILL putt things back in the wrong spot, how can we make it faster/easier to determine the right size X part from an unsorted mass?" So what is the fastest most efficient way to measure a pile of spokes as opposed to one at a time using a blue ruler ( http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Spoke)?
Personally I think the best solution is to NOT store spokes for reuse -- instead save up for a spoke cutter and just buy a stock of 310mm spokes and cut them down as you need them. Bend the old spokes into loops and use them to hang tags off the handlebars.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Morrison Executive Director Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective 2312 S. West Temple Salt Lake City, UT 84115 w: 801-328-2453 c: 801-688-0183 f: 801-466-3856 www.slcbikecollective.org

Hey All, Does anyone have some innovative solutions to spoke sorting and storage? Our "tape them together and toss them in the filing cabinet" approach has always left a lot to be desired, compounded by the fact that we just inherited a spoke collection from a pro shop that closed a while ago.
I'll take pictures, diagrams, and verbal descriptions! Thanks in a big way, Clifford

We recently picked up a plexiglass paintbrush display rack for this purpose (It was being tossed out by a local art supply store right at the time we were starting a major spoke-sorting project.)

Hi Tito,
We ask that our volunteers sign a liability waiver so that we are not liable for any injuries sustained as a result of participation in the co-op.

Im shocked at some of the responses of folks. Im sure others can speak more clearly on this than i, but volunteers or patrons can not sign away rights to a safe workspace etc etc.
Your volunteers are your staff, and as such should be treated like they are in any other work place, rights and rules. Your patrons are the reason you are here. So to say that sorry your on your own for an injury is just poor planning.
I understand that part of this is budget planning for insurance etc, but to just say they are on there own is lame.

It really has nothing to do if you are staff or a volunteer. To operate without insurance and coverage for your volunteers and staff in most states is illegal. The question comes down to what level of coverage you can afford to purchase.
The question was about cost and caps on per accident.
Bworks pays for our volunteers with our insurance if needed. We have only had one major event and a couple minor events over 22 years. About once a year we send a volunteer or kid to the hospital. We work on getting them to the treatment they need, then document as much as we can, review with a few people, and hope for the best.
So i could see if it was something that happened often it could hurt us financially.
But to say we should put the issue on the volunteers after handing them tools and putting them to work? Thats lame.

These are difficult issues, and ones that should be discussed with a lawyer licensed in the state you operate in. My understanding is that liability waivers, at least in PA, are a good idea but cannot indemnify you or your organization against liability for neglect and similar things that put you at fault. Liability insurance is an essential tool to protect your volunteers from potential personal liability for things that may happen in that shop. It doesn't have to be very expensive or difficult to administer, and it guards against potential risks that could shut down an entire organization. I believe there is a resource list on the wiki to get you started making calls, but an insurance broker may have access to additional resources.

Hi there,
To clarify, we as a community center do have insurance to cover our volunteers. The waiver is a legal protection so that our staff do not get sued if someone gets a finger stuck in the spokes, e.g.

Hi Tito,
We ask that our volunteers sign a liability waiver so that we are not liable for any injuries sustained as a result of participation in the co-op.

we recently faced the issue of one of our core volunteers getting injured in the shop. when the time came to decide about a trip to the hospital it became apparent that the person did not have insurance and could not afford the trip. have other shops faced this situation? do you (the shop) pay for or help pay for medical expenses. the trip would have run anywhere form $300 to $1000. is there a limit that folks have decided on? is it a process of reimbursement? do any shops have insurance that cover such things? any input would be much appreciated.

I think of Bike Valet Parking as a way to get folks aware of various bike organizations.

hi, all, It's been a while since I posted to this list (though I lurk now and

and I missed seeing everyone at the last bike!bike!, but I have a

I'm helping write an article about bike valet services (bike parking
at
events that draw too many bikes to simply lock up) and it occurred to
me
that there are probably lots of folks/ projects doing this as a form
of
outreach that I don't know about.
Here in SC it is most reliable at the farmer's market (where I
currently
get paid to do it -- oogle bikes, chat w/ cyclists, eat veges; pretty
rad).
I know that the San Francisco Bike Coalition does a lot of this on an event-to-event basis.
Other places that you know about? Particularly successful instances?
Anyone
combining parking with wrenching?
Reply on or off list.
