Hey all, We sell a lot of parts to people fixing up their bikes and some of our newer head mechanics have been asking for a suggested price list for used parts. Anybody have a good one they could email? Hell you could even post it to POB 196 Montpelier, VT 05601-0196

hey everyone,
at our shop we have a display case - new donations are sorted and the most desirable parts are shined up, priced by a senior mechanic, and stashed in the case. everything else goes in the bins and anything in the bins is generally five bucks. or free if the person really had to dig. that way the nice things are safe from gleaners, and if some one with no money needs a nice part, staff can always cut use their discretion to cut a special deal.

i'm sure it generally depends on your financial needs, but at sopo, we ask for a suggested donation of $5 a part. it makes it real simple. sure, on the occasion that something nice comes in, we set it aside in our "good shit" cabinet. we've found that sometimes people can't give us anything, but most of the time, people give us more. it just sort of works out :)
here is what we do -> http://www.sopobikes.org/pricing

Here's our perspective: everything that comes into our shop is available for no money. If someone wants a bike: volunteer 2 hours and take our BikeWell class; if someone wants a part: take it and use it. What we have found: more money comes into the donation jar, on average, than when we had very specific 'suggested donations.' The jar brings in $20-$100 a day.
Addressing parts miners: we talk to people in the shop and create a community atmosphere, so people understand 'take what you need, leave the rest for others.' There is occasional abuse, but we decided to live with and address that on individual basis.
Once every two weeks or so, we will take a complete high-end bike or part (mainly a nice shock) to a bike friendly used gear store. He takes 20%, gives free cycles the rest.
