Riding More with Less
Hello ThinkTank,
Greetings! Hope you're well. I wanted to let people know about my new book *Riding More with Less*, published 1/23/24 by PM Press. It focuses on resourceful approaches towards fixing the bikes people actually ride, giving space to topics including how to break rust, knowing when it's safe to reuse parts, and more broadly to the many older technologies still in common use. Best of all, the book also features technical insights and commentary from volunteers and mechanics at 34 community bike shops across 4 countries. Great to encounter so many insightful people, through this project -- I learnt a lot, and as I hope you'll agree their voices add quite a bit.
Background: I began working as a mechanic in bike shops in 1994, and this is my fourth bike repair manual. It's the second one that I've done with PM Press. More info can be found at the publisher's website here: https://pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1543
Question: I'll be visiting family in the Boston/Cambridge area the second and third weeks of July, and I'm hoping to set up some book events. Would anyone know people at community shops out there whom I might ask about this?
Thanks, Sam Tracy
Thanks for the heads up on this. Sounds like a great resource even for those of us who've working on bikes for a long time.

I would highly recommend this book! It should be required reading for anyone getting started in a community bike shop. :-)

Good morning Steve, Phoenix and Jan,
Thanks for your interest in the new book! People were generous with their contributions, and we managed to capture lots of key insights re: getting bikes back on the road. (Who knew ammonia can work, for freeing seized alloy posts from steel frames? I sure as hell didn't!)
I would definitely encourage shops on this list to consider picking up Riding More with Less -- there's going to be a lot of overlap between the communities you serve and the audience this book hopes to find. Copying Steven at PM Press, who can answer any questions people may have about getting copies and so on.
Cheers, Sam

Greetings all,
In the event anyone is interested, I wanted to let people know that I've uploaded all of the non-anonymous surveys I received for *Riding More with Less*, which was 30 of 33 total. (Two parties opted for interviews rather than the survey; in those cases I uploaded my notes.) My thanks to the Bike Collectives Network for providing the venue! Link is here https://archive.org/details/rmwl-survey-danni-limonez-bikes-n-roses/RMWL%20Survey%20-%20Nicole%20Muratore%2C%20Bike%20Saviours%20Bicycle%20Collective%20%20/ .
People were generous with their contributions to this project, and I learnt a lot, but there remains much I was unable to include in a single book. Those interested in what may be a kind of ad-hoc broader survey of community bike shops might want to page through -- there may even be people or shops you know!
Cheers, Sam Tracy
