Hi there!
We're trying to figure out a way to streamline our pricing a little bit better and ease the process of getting incoming items up on the shelf. Do you have any suggestions or tips for this?? We've been in operation for 3 years and there are still untagged items all the time.
Thanks for any feedback!

A Velocity, unless the item is off a higher-end group, everything goes in the $5 an item bins. Higher end items are placed in the display case and if a price isn't marked, when the part is asked about someone will get a phone call to get a price.
The $5 is often adjusted for those in need.

When Community Cycles started charging real prices for used parts our revenue from used parts went up over $20k in one year. Not expensive, just what the parts are worth. We don't tag them, but the same experienced person checks you out and it is actually he who started the charge real prices policy. Of course if someone needs help they can be charged less. But most people, especially long time customers were happy to be paying more & said they were glad to see us charging it. You don't do anyone any favors if you run on such a low profit margin that you can't keep staff or even stay in business.

We put most donations into the parts bins and charge a fixed price. $4 for an rd, $5 for a pair of pedals. Fancier stuff goes into the case at our register. We tag those with prices usually by looking up the part on ebay's completed listings and marking 50-75% of the average price it sold for. Prices in real scenarios usually end up much less but we were having a problem with "pickers" so wanted to discourage folks who were just buying stuff for resale from taking all the stuff that folks fixing their commuter bike needed. -Enzo Bikerowave

Also we don't have paid staff so we don't have to worry so much.

Bike farm uses a sliding scale price guide (see attached) and a treasure chest display area. We've also started selling on ebay. We're making about $200 extra a month from this effort, and clearing our shop of really odd ball things.
Core volunteers are empowered to make decision about giving used parts to those in need. We have a firm policy of not giving away new parts, they cost us money. When pricing higher end stuff, we often look at ebay as a reference. We ask for about half or 75% of what it sells for there, although this all depends on the quality. We try our best to pre price things in the display case using a label maker.
We find that having an inventory night, or work night, where the goal is explicitly to price items in the case is the best way to get it done.
Having everything clearly labeled is an admirable goal, but don't beat yourself up (or your collective) if you can't get there. It's kinda like sweeping the floors, you just have to keep doing it.
