Re: [TheThinkTank] Bike Education/Clinic curriculum?
I have written bicycle education material for academic class rooms, youth
programs, adult programs, community programs, city government.
Each time I try to make the lesson apply to the current lives of the
precipitant, but more importantly Make It FUN.
After all we do not ride because it sucks, we ride because it is fun.
Bicycle Education should be fun too.

Here is what I have for advanced class instructor sheets at the moment: Choosing a Bike: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcgc3dtg_16hkt569g7&hl=en Headset: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dctsxwqx_1d8m6mwd4&hl=en Bottom Bracket: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcgc3dtg_8gwpnq9gj&hl=en Hub Bearings and Gears: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dctsxwqx_3fkt94dhq&hl=en Brakes: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dctsxwqx_2gdvrtvc4&hl=en Derailleurs Shifters and Cables: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcgc3dtg_11cm4rctgr&hl=en Tires and Wheel Sizing: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcgc3dtg_20dmj5x8cq&hl=en Wheel truing: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcgc3dtg_9fzs26mhb&hl=en
This is the order that we are teaching them in during our current class session. We are also talking about adding a wheel building class at the end. I'd also like to get an overall instructor sheet together to go over the main points we're trying to get across in all of them,
As for starting another list we could start a Google group. That works as an email list and message board simultaneously. Google Docs works well for collaboration, multiple people can be working on a document at the same time and see changes almost live.
Any interest in that? I could set it up.

Yes please!
Starting a something like a Google Group would be a good way to organize the information and have it easily accessible. Like Josh, I think a lot of dialogue would be generated from just these discussions and, as an added plus, the less-intrusive/more organized nature of Google Groups (like the ability to use it just as a message board) might lure some of these organizations we're mentioning out of the dark. Maybe not, but it's worth a shot.

Ryan, thanks for those advanced class instructor sheets.
The idea of a Google group for education material sounds great. When it's set up, I will start posting materials that we are using at Bici centro. I really like the idea of collaboration and please don't hesitate to share tips that keep your teaching fun & interesting.

Hello Think Tank,
It's great to see so many people and organizations across the country communicating to make our work stronger and more meaningful.Greetings to you all.
For those who haven't seen it, our Earn-A-Bike Instructor Training Manual which we use in our youth programs is available to download off of our website. We also sell these for $7 but please feel free to download the manual and see if it is useful in your own programming.
http://www.bikesnotbombs.org/EarnABike
We also have a youth made bike safety training video about 45 minutes long which discusses general bike & helmet fit, bike safety checks, rules of the road, bike path etiquette, preparing for a ride, and general tips (how to prep for a ride, crossing train tracks, hand signals right and left turns...). Please contact me directly if you are interested in purchasing this video for $35. All proceeds will go towards supporting our work at Bikes Not Bombs.
peace, Christina

i also think the wiki is a completely underutilized resource--from both ends. it could be much more vibrant with pics of in-shop solutions to space issues, creative things volunteers have done, tool/pegboard layout (i'm specifically interested in this one, bike shop photogs...), etc. i don't often look to see what's been updated. is there a way to subscribe to changes, so that i get an email when something new is added?
i posted our youth earn-a-bike curriculum there last week sometime, and it was a bit of a struggle, and i like to think of myself as pretty internets savvy.
