HI Folks, I'm part of a start-up effort in an urban neighborhood in Cincinnati. We hope to have our own shop, one day, where we will rebuild and sell bikes, affordably. In the meantime, we have pop-up repair sessions (2 Saturdays/month) planned for the spring/summer, this year. We did a few of these part of last summer, but didn't charge anything. Job Title: Bicycle Mechanic/Collective member The Bike Church is a collectively run bicycle repair shop and educational space located in downtown Santa Cruz. We are seeking a highly motivated core member to share responsibility in running the shop. This includes both working with the public during our open hours as well as maintaining/running the shop in the off hours, doing repairs, and strategizing for the shop's long term plan. The Bike Church is a cooperative which means you will be working side-by-side with other mechanics on jobs that include but are not limited to: assisting the public in working on bikes, processing incoming donations of used bikes and parts, fixing bikes to sell, office work, cleaning, inventory, as well as one-off projects which vary. You must be a self-motivated, responsible individual who is task-oriented and understands the importance of communication. It is not required but very helpful if applicants have some familiarity with our space and collectively run groups. We would like to strengthen the collective process and also expand the business. Please have some experience with bike repair and the bike industry. Interest in bookkeeping is a plus. Bilingual/multilingual is a plus. Grant writing is a plus. Computer skills are a plus. An important value of the Bike Church is to be a safe space for individuals from our community no matter their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, income, or ability. Thus any applicants must also be able to foster, respect and create a safe, fun, space for our community. In addition, the Bike Church is at times a very vibrant, busy space, and staff members must have strong people skills and, importantly, communication about boundaries. Quill Stem Wedge Angle?

Does anyone have information or experience about the typical wedge angle for quill stems? Saint Sheldon doesn't mention a specific angle, but I did find an ISO document of dubious brevity that claims it's supposed to be 36 degrees since 1990. Measuring a stem (early 90s I think) I have with me, I'm getting more like 34 degrees. I have been following the replies to my initial message about the Chinese bike share surplus situation. Thanks to all who have replied. I really got a good laugh out of the Slate.com link from (Elese Daniel Lee?). That was a fun and a useful perspective. Still, as with many folks I think, the images of tens of thousands of bikes piled up is shocking. I also very much appreciate the perspective that these bikes represent a resource that may be junk to the initial manufacturers but they may represent a functional and even valuable resource to someone else. I am a new entrant into this world of 'community' bike shops and international bike-aid projects. I am starting to learn that there are financial and logistical challenges to converting an abandoned bike into a usable tool/vehicle for someone who may need it. China Bike Share Surplus?

Hello ThinkTank list serve and fellow community bike shoppers. I have been following messages on this list serve for some time now and it I think it is finally my time to post a message to the group. Is there an organization out there that in some way may be involved or working with the apparently vast surplus of bicycles in China? I just came across this web site for The Atlantic... https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2018/03/bike-share-oversupply-in-china-hu… Good googly-woogly!!! Talk about a bicycle resource!

Thank you for your reply, Clint. I don't have much wisdom to bring to bear on this subject but the wasted resource grates against my native inclination for efficiency, re-use and re-purposing. My instincts tell me you are correct in that the construction style of these "share" bikes does not lend itself to long-life, sustainability or restoration into a more traditional bike - but I just don't know if that is true. I have never even ridden one. Which is why I put the question to this bike collectives list serve.
