Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. So, to accommodate a diversity of workshop styles and topics, we’ll be dividing our workshop schedule into 15 minute increments - when you sign up for a workshop please use the notes section to request as much or as little time as you think your topic requires. For example: Want to do a 7-10 minute PEDAL (Partnerships, Engagement, Design, and Access Lectures) with time for questions? Let us know that you want one 15 minute increment. Adult Earn a Bike

Any workshops out there have Adult Earn-a-Bike programs? How are they run? Are they successful? Do they differ from your regular volunteers? I'd like to get something started here and wanted feedback on other folks' programs. At FMCBW we had a program where folks could buy a bike out right and then work on it during open shop times (if anything needed replacing that was included in the price), OR they could volunteer 15 hours (i think) and we'd get them a bike and help them fix it up (same thing, replacement parts where included, if needed).......We have a bunch of adult bikes and, depending on the shape they are in, we'll fix 'em and sell them at the Hub, or minor adjustments are done and we sell 'em cheap at our monthly garage sales... Personally, anytime I see a full suspension out in the wild I want to leave a note on it that they could trade it in towards an Adult bike that we'd help them fix up....but that might be just me... laying out a community bike workshop

Hey guys, Building from the ground up here in Clonakilty. As part of a much larger arts centre application I'm writing a part of the project to have a very strong repair workshop element, led by the community bike shop (rarr!). So the bike workshop could be the beating heart of a much larger busy space, managing a tool library, welding space, paint spraying space. The space would need to be really fit for purpose (firstly as a learning bike workshop suited for subscribers, volunteers, workshop participants). These are the design considerations I've been thinking about, and also a rough drawing I did of this kind of set up with ideas I've practised in my own limited workshop design and layout experience; stuff I've learned from reading design books ({Pattern Language- I love you), and loads of considerate tips I gleaned from reading your wonderful posts. With the following considerations in place (below) could you add anything or offer advise? Much appreciated. i love to read this thread. Ulick PROPOSED MODEL FOR WORKSHOP ON THE SITE - Master bench ELEVATED (specialised more expensive tools located and stored here. Space is also separated by a low partition, but one using that station has a clear line of sight right across workshop. - space for a blackboard/screen/ projector - 6- 8 workstations. more multi-use benches (1. washer station, wood section) -Fold away workshop (PRESSES/ CUPBOARDS/ COASTERS) - Lighting and electricity needs - Bench needs. i used scaffolding planks covered with 1/4" ply top on my last bike bench and I'm happy enough. Different benches of different heights. - Power needs: possibly accommodating a medium arc and a tig welding station (safely separated from bike workshop/ classroom) - Welding and forge (?) station - what do i do with grease and oil stains? - Storage needs (bikes, tools, parts possible to be all shuttered away so that the workshop is multifunctional - access needs (wheelchairs, physical disabilities,loading in, shop access from street) - Power input needs (voltage, power outputs/ plugs (where/ how many? - Water needs (plumbing, sinks, etc) - Risk assessments, safety statement - lighting (I was thinking LED Strips over benches, then some more ambient light, invite in natural light where possible - heating and ventilation needs
