Design contest for bicycle valet parking rack: $250 prize

Hello, colleagues; The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op <http://ohiocitycycles.org/> has been valet-parking bikes<http://ohiocitycycles.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24%3…>at community events for about 10 years. We have tried many different solutions for portable parking racks for this service including shipping pallets and baby-crib rails, and are now using bike rims<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091211/83848784…>screwed to three furring strips<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091210/83848781…>, (the best photos we have are in these links). We're looking for a better solution, as we have several regular yearly events where we need to park up to 300 bikes. As the above-linked photos attest, portability is a primary consideration. Thanks to a grant from Cleveland Colectivo <http://www.clevelandcolectivo.org/>, we are offering $250 to anyone with a better idea. This contest closes May 11th. August 7th, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *The 816 Bicycle Collective Makes Plans To Move To A Drier Location* Kansas City, Missouri – Last winter electrical damage from a constant leaking roof left the 816 Bicycle Collective without electricity for nearly 3 months. Despite this setback, and the freezing temperatures, volunteers setup shop outside, (sometimes in the snow,) to help all-weather bicycle commuters with repairs. The power is on now, it’s 80 degrees hotter, and with community support 816 is preparing the first steps of relocating to a new building, (with a better roof.) The 816 Bicycle Collective is a recycle a bicycle project that has been helping people in the greater Kansas City area earn bicycles and learn about mechanics for the past 3 years. Community Bike folk, I'm trying to settle on a topic for a masters thesis and I'm interested in doing research into the organizational, legal and funding structures of community bike shops. I know that at bikebike minneapolis there was a session called "Plan Voltron" about creating a "cooperative of cooperatives" and some of the folks from our bike shop that made it to toronto mentioned this was also a topic of conversation this year. My first thought is that a qualitative and quantitative overview or survey of community bike shops would give a solid base for further work on this idea by identifying needs, wants, strengths, characteristics, etc. that would be useful to organizing linkages between shops. My main focus of study so far has been the "worker centers" movement, which seem to parallel community bike shops in some interesting ways, such as being relatively new, decentralized, and fast growing. I think this ( http://smlr.rutgers.edu/Unions/FineWorker.pdf) study that was done of workercenters would serve as a good model for one of community bike shops since it's central aim is to be useful for further movement building. So, now to the questions: 1. Does anyone know of any research done on community bike shops, academic or otherwise? 2. Would you see this as potentially useful information? Useful enough to participate in a survey of your shop? 3. If so, what kinds of things would you like to see research on? I would be doing this using both traditional research methods as well as more "strategic investigation" techniques, meaning that perspective would be from within the movement as a participant and their would be a specific strategic "usefulness" for the end result. Hey folks, we talked a little about this during the thinktank workshop and I know Ainsley was going to send out a notice to everyone that attended but I thought I'd try to get the ball rolling while its still fresh in our minds. I have added an item for each workshop in the Bike!Bike! 2010 wiki page for notes. If you attended a workshop it would be great if you can put any notes you took into that workshop, or even if you just remember what happened that would be helpful as well. If there is already a writeup for that workshop, it would be helpful if you reviewed it and edited if you can make any improvements. If you're not sure how to use the wiki, do what you can or ask someone. Someone else will likely re-format as long as the text is there. You can find the page here. Thanks everybody! godwin. Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) provides community-based education and assists development projects with recycled bicycles, related technologies and technical assistance as concrete alternatives to the militarism, over-consumption and inequality that breed war and environmental destruction. Our organization is part of a worldwide movement for peace and responsible stewardship of the earth. BNB began in 1984 as an environmentally conscious campaign in support of social change in favor of the poor in Nicaragua. In 1990, BNB began to pursue its mission in Boston’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Today, we operate a thriving Bicycle Recycling and Youth Training Center where we offer six unique, high-quality programs that empower and organize youth and their families to work towards long-term change. Our programs create real community, with long-term, positive relationships built across lines of age, race, and class. Position: Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) seeks to hire a Youth Development Coordinator to oversee our youth programs. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. Salary range is $30,000 – 32,000. The Youth Development Coordinator reports to the Executive Director. Responsibilities: Administration and Supervision (35%) Practice peer supervision with Youth Programs Coordinator. Supervise, evaluate, and support the professional development and growth of the Youth Programs Alumni Services Fellow. Plan and facilitate regular team meetings with Youth Programs Team. Act as Youth Programs Team liaison, by reporting regularly to Executive Director about program results and needs. Local Wiki ... please help!

Hello all, I apologize in advance for the plug, but I wanted to support a project by the same guys who created the forum that acted as our webpage for approximately 4yrs (http://daviswiki.org/Bike_Church). This is a great community owned way of logging information about your city/town/village and making it available to everyone. If you think this might be a nice addition to your city please donate or spread the word in your communities. They are currently trying to scale up the project(http://localwiki.org/) to make a template, and spread this local media to communities around the country and possibly world. They are currently looking to raise $25K of which people have already pledged over $11K. There is a video with more information on the main page: http://daviswiki.org/ (our collective is featured in the video). from there check out the events board or links from the main page or just search for anything you might like to know about or find in Davis California and if it exists there will be a page about it. I think it speaks for itself. It has comments from the community about any business so you can hear first hand about what others in the community think and also link to pages of some of those users to see what the community thinks of them too. Hey all Bike!Bike! 2010 wrapped up Sunday and was a great success. We're still not sure how many people ended up attending (have to spend some time with our registration spreadsheets!), but it was an awesome 4 days with fantastic, hot sunny weather (which lead to several late-night group swims) and so many rad guests. We were so happy and proud to have you all here in Toronto. Thanks to everyone who attended, presented, volunteered, donated, and danced their pants off at the dance party. Greetings and namaste! The fireweeduniversecity.org collective is interesting in forming a community bike shop in the Seven mile and Woodward area. We are currently in need of tools and bikes. We have a temporary location to get started in at a garage next to the Penrose art house and garden and support from the growtown redevelopment project. If you or anyone you know is interested knowing more about or helping the Detroit Fireweed build a bike center please don't be shy. All hands on deck, steady as we grow. <3 mars

I have registered to attend Interbike in Las Vegas on September 23 and 24. Anyone in Ohio or further east driving to the show? I am willing to share the driving and the expenses there. Also, I am visiting friends north of Phoenix after the show and would like to share driving and expenses with anyone going to Phoenix or in that direction. Volunteers: what motivates them?

I've been a volunteer at the local bike co-op and recently have been thinking about some way to develop and keep volunteers. Our board has been thinking that offering used parts for hours worked and 10% over cost on new parts might entice some. Perhaps for volunteers with a history of at least 6 hours a month we could offer something else... I'm wondering though if we are approaching this correctly. Perhaps the motivation might be elsewhere. For myself, when I started volunteering, I was just doing it because I thought the co-op was a cool idea (and I wanted to learn more about wrenching...). Others seem to be addicted to fixing up (and possibly flipping...) bikes at home and are always in need of parts. Still others, particularly the younger ones, seem hooked on the coolness of it all.
