Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. Liability Waivers

Looking for some examples of liability waivers for repairs and/or totally gifted bikes. I work with a group of folks that flip bikes and do repairs for individuals in need. Unfortunately we are only able to operate at our space for a few hours at a time and usually cannot store or take bikes over night. Due to the severe disrepair of some of the bikes we come across and our limited time with them often we are not able to get them in the complete repair that we would hope. Any co ops or collectives out there use these? What should or should not be included? Thanks

In a corner of our shop we keep specialty or large tools on both a labeled board and in toolboxes. For patrons new to our shop or unfamiliar with the tools, volunteers usually grab the tools. Otherwise, we keep everything labeled and (hopefully) easy enough for folks to find. Pics attached! Looking for HR and Compensation policies

Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, DE is growing and we need to get better policies in place for addressing HR and Compensation issues. As a member of the Board of Directors and an active volunteer I'm charged with developing some policies, procedures and guidelines for managing employees, including roles and responsibilities of Board members and the Executive Director. If anyone has documentation that you are willing to share to give me a leg-up, that would be great, TIA, Mike

Health Hazard from Drum Brakes

Hi everyone, I recently came across a vendor selling a drum brake[1] where they claimed it had "No asbes" i.e. no asbestos. This led me to search about asbestos in bicycle brakes, and indeed it's a thing: http://santanatandem.com/Library/AraiDBrakeIns.pdf <http://santanatandem.com/Library/AraiDBrakeIns.pdf> (go to page 2, paragraph 4 in "Service") The quantity is small and it's not friable, it's solid chunks (like old chemistry lab benches) which pose no actual hazard. Unless you are frequently overhauling these drum brakes with abrasives & sucking in the dust, the risk should be negligible, but it's good to know about. If any shops out there have a bin for drum brakes, I'd suggest putting a warning label on it, or attaching a tag to the individual brakes if they are in a mixed bin.
