Bike Giveaway?

We typically reach our storage capacity of donated bikes around this time of year. Our process is to assess and price bikes before selling them (cash or volunteer equity), but we can get gridlocked if we have too many incoming donations. We're considering an annual bike giveaway, and I'm looking for some wisdom/experience. My pros and cons list for a giveaway event for un-assessed donations: *Pros* Expose more public to the shop Clear out bikes that are a physical and mental burden on the volunteers Redistribute more bikes! (part of our mission) *Cons* Breaks our principle of earned equity vs hand-out. Would likely lead to redistributing bikes that we'll need to work on anyway. Along the same lines, could hurt our rep if we give away broken or dangerous bikes. Could still leave us with the bottom-of-the-barrel bikes. Does anyone have a consistent method for managing bike capacity? My gut tells me we should just commit to a bike-count, and stick with it. Then we can hone our process for pulling the wheat from the chaff on an ongoing basis. -Andy Brok Spoke, Lexington

We occasionally do a "$20 bike sale" to move some old unwanted frames. It tends to draw a big crowd and make some quick cash. Hello wonderful thinktank, here at Troy Bike Rescue in Troy, NY (albany area) we are embarking on a session of culling and cleaning out our stock. we will generate some scrap for sure, but we will also be culling a load of overstock complete bikes in 'project' phase that we would rather not scrap if possible. this is just an email of inquiry to see if anyone out there within a couple hour motor vehicle range of us is currently filling a crate for export, or if any up and coming shops need a boost in their project bikes. In the past we have worked with Bikes for Humanity, but they have ceased their operations, at least for the moment. Please email me and cc: Ken (cc:d above) if you have ideas or contacts. We could rent or borrow a truck or trailer and potentially bring you quite a load within the month!! How much time spent on overhauls?

Greetings fellow bicycle enthusiasts and all-around do-gooders, We run an earn-a-bike program, though in our program, which is relatively short in duration, the students receive a used bike which has already been reconditioned. Consequently, I am currently overhauling/refurbishing bikes for use in our fall classes. My question is... how long (# of hrs) do you typically spend on a complete bicycle overhaul? What does it include? Do you always put in new cables/housing, and do BB/headset/hub rebuilds, or just on the extra crunchy bikes? Hello from Baltimore Youth Kinetic Energy (BYKE)! We are moving to a new and awesome location, but we’ll be in a basement. We might only be there for 1 year, so major renovations aren’t going to happen. I have two main concerns: 1. Stairs(full flight, medium width)+ young people+bikes without brakes -a safe ramp? -has anyone tried building a kinetically powered platform elevator? -has anyone tried to build a track to secure a bicycle into and then let it fall with style? having some kind of slowing mechanism? 2. Ventilation codes -is that for the landlord to figure out? -regardless: were there any cheap and easy ways to increase ventilation? Any other unpredictable lessons learned from those who have held DIY bike workshops in basements? Thanks!
