What to Teach When You Only Have 1 Hour...

Okay Folks, here's the challenge: You've been offered a chance to do a bike related workshop on a college campus. The only direction you have is "we want you to do a bike related workshop on campus. You have 1 hour". So, what do you teach? Basic Bike maintenance? Riding in/as traffic? How to: get yourself to class on time even if you: get a flat, drop the chain, bend the wheel in a pot hole, etc? In your experiences, what has been valuable for adults/college students? The community bike shop is a new concept in our City and we're trying to launch an effort to get students to lease our repurposed bikes. This will be a good "in" for us and a good way to introduce Utica Bike Rescue to the college community. Any thoughts? Thanks a Bunch, Matt VanSlyke Utica Bike Rescue

Dollar value of Volunteer time at Bike Valet or in general?

We're wrapping up much of our summer programming here in Longmont, CO and I'm trying to determine the "dollar value" of our services. Currently we don't pay our volunteers to do bike parking and we don't charge events for this service either. We struggled to fill many of our bike parking shifts this summer, so, our board will be discussing developing a charge for bike parking and rental of our rack/bike valet in a box program. In order to do so I'm wondering - dear Think Tank members.... What is the per hour value of volunteer time for bike valet/parking at events (or in general) in your area? thx. -- "We all do better when we all do better" - Paul Wellstone

Bike Infrastructure question - comparable cities??

hey ThinkTank, somewhat separate from my work at Troy Bike Rescue, I am part of an appointed citizens committee on alternative transportation (an idea our city is just sort of coming around to). we have 0 bike lanes, few bike racks, and about 11 sharrows (under a year old). our task is primarily research-oriented, and I am searching for comparable cities and hoping the ThinkTank might help me. Do any of you have suggestions of cities with the following characteristics: -population: 50 - 100,000 -small "bike culture" community -sizeable low-income population -investing time/money/energy into bicycles as a way of turning the city around. -demonstrable progress on that front i know they are out there, but most examples are of much bigger cities. I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!! Andrew

One thing we struggle with is storing drop handle bars. Meanwhile we've finally figured out to handle tires effectively. Floor Pump Recommendation

Hi Folks, Over the year we have tried many different floor pumps with the pump heads not lasting more than a year. What brand and model floor pump has been the most reliable for you? We prefer floor pumps with the gauge close to the floor since the gauges don't bust when the pump falls over. Bike!Bike! 2013 Call Out for Workshop Proposals!

Bike!Bike! starts in 2 weeks! We have a lot of wonderful workshops already set for this year. You can check them out on the bikebike.org website. You can also propose a workshop on the website as well. With that said: *We need more workshop proposals!* We specifically need workshops in: *Mechanics:* examples: Basic Bicycle Maintenance, Advanced Bicycle Maintenance, 3 speed hubs, Disc Brakes, Freak bikes, DIY welding. I know we have bicycle mechanics coming from all over. Please share your knowledge! *Arts & Crafts:* examples: How to make a pouch, How to make a cycling cap, DIY Bike Painting Tips, How to make a bike bag, How to make a top tube cover, diy designing and decorating your ride, How to make [a really cool thing you know how to make] out of bicycle parts. *We encourage individuals to share their skills and crafts with others. * *Youth Development within Bike culture:* *This track will focus on creating a space for youth and what structural and interpersonal foundations are needed to create and maintain that space. We will also look at how to deal with conflict and tough situations with our youth patrons. Also, this track is intended to all address how ageism, sexism, and racism has the ability to intersect and how we must deal with it within ourselves and with our youth (i.e. mostly white run shop in a mostly people of color community or working with young “girls”* and “boys”*) This track is intended to look at every aspect of youth development. Whether or not your shop has a youth track, is just a youth exclusive spot, or doesn’t have a youth sector at all , we as the riders, mechanics, and advocates of what each young person connects with and loves has a responsibility to do what it takes to interact and give back to all young people. Seriously now, we will need to pass the reigns to them so we need to invest in them. * * * *Food & Environmental Justice links to Bike Advocacy:* *examples: How to Build a Bicycle Powered blender, grinder, etc..., Reusing Bike parts to help your garden grow, Intersection of Bikes and managing farms.* * * Anti-oppression and Anti-racism Strategies and Development: *examples: Anti-oppression and Anti-Racism strategies, How is the bike community a gentrifying force, Any workshops on gentrification, combatting oppression in your community bike project, Accountability in a radical setting.* * * *Womin/LGBTQQ in Bie/Mechanics Culture:* *Some topics of discussion may include: womin/LGBTQQ--volunteer retention, dealing with both external and internal misogyny, racism, gender discrimination, transphobia etc.,---networking, WOC/QPOC voices and movements, teaching skills, dealing with tension or push back, etc. * Deadline for workshop proposals is September 25.
