I've seen a number of similar jobs offered on this list. To those of you posting, has this been an effective way to advertise the position? Do you recommend other methods? Wheel Rack

I noted the use of a 2" x 4" as a fork rack and that looks like a good idea. I tried to do a search of the archives for ideas on wheel racks and the query failed. So other than hooks from the ceiling, what ideas have folks seen for storing wheels? I am working on improving my emt handlebar rack, will post a picture of it when it is completed. Here is how the work benches turned out. I wasn't quite done but you get the idea. I photocopied the tools then used polyurethane to seal the picture to the pegboard with a description printed out above them. I also got hooks with a security pin from McMaster-Carr and secured them with a hook holder from Hartville Tool. Bailing wire also works. ceiling ideas

hi friends, i am wondering if anyone out there bike space builders or otherwise have heard of or used any creative alternatives to sheetrock on the ceilings of industrial, loft, or community bike spaces. we want to insulate to R60 if possible. we have one example of what appears to be foil-backed attic batting stapled to the joists to create an insulated, reflective, and easy/inexpensive solution, but dont have any details or specs on the materials. we are dealing with a 15 foot ceiling that is currently uninsulated tin, and is in bad shape. thanks for reading and shoot me an email if you have any ideas! this for a future-phase of renovation at the new Troy Bike Rescue space in Troy, NY, but we need to figure out the cost now. heres some pics of the space in action Before (when we got the building in January for $5000 from the city): https://picasaweb.google.com/tbr.collective/WheelhouseBefore After (we opened June 2 with a youth shop and open shop twice a week) https://picasaweb.google.com/tbr.collective/Wheelhouse_Summer11 Andrew Lynn http://www.troybikerescue.org

Bike Mechanic Community Cycles (http://CommunityCycles.org) seeks a motivated and qualified individual to assist in working on customer tune ups and sale bikes. Duties include performing tune ups, refurbishing bikes for retail, as well as preparing for large bike sales. This is a 6-8 week full-time, temporary position during the evening shift 3-11p.m Monday through Friday. Responsibilities Refurbish bikes for showroom and large bike sales Perform customer tune ups Provide customer service, including repair diagnosis and point-of-sale operation Use of Point of Sale system (computerized cash register) Assist with general shop cleanliness Attend weekly staff meetings Report to the executive director and shop manager Position Requirements Successful candidates will have previous professional experience in the following areas: 3+ years of experience repairing bikes Retail management experience Ability to help customers and represent organization in a professional manner. House Transportation Chairman John Mica (R-FL) announced today that his transportation bill will eliminate dedicated funding for bicycling and walking, including Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and the Recreational Trails Program, and discourages states from choosing to spend their dollars on these activities that are "not in the federal interest." Chairman Mica's statement that these programs remain "eligible" for funding is worthless; without dedicated funding for these three programs, they are effectively eliminated. Things on the Senate side are not much better. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the lead Republican negotiator on the transportation bill, declared that one of his TOP THREE priorities for the transportation bill is to eliminate 'frivolous spending for bike trails.' This is in direct conflict with Senator Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) commitment to maintain dedicated funding for biking and walking. However, the Senate is working towards a bi-partisan solution, and Senator Inhofe's comments mean funding for bicycle and pedestrian programs is at risk of total elimination. Help protect Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and Recreational Trails. Contact your Members of Congress and tell them to reach out to Senators Inhofe, Boxer, and Congressman Mica to urge them to continue funding for these important bicycling and walking programs. Need some good facts to bolster your argument? Read on: Not in the federal interest? Biking and walking make up 12 percent of all trips in the US - even as funding for biking and walking projects only accounts for 1.5% of the federal transportation budget. That is more than 4 billion bicycle trips and 40 billion walking trips a year, including trips to work, school, shopping and for recreation and tourism. Frivolous? Two-thirds of all pedestrian deaths are on federally funded highways. One-third of children's traffic deaths happen when children are walking or bicycling and are struck by cars. Bicycling and walking programs build sidewalks, crosswalks and bikeways-improving accessibility and saving lives. The Facts * Biking and walking are important forms of transportation, and funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements is a very efficient use of federal transportation dollars. Portland, OR built 300 miles of bike lanes and trails for the cost of one mile of highway. * These projects create jobs and build local economies. Building bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure creates 46% more jobs than building road-only projects per million dollars spent. Cities that invest in bicycle and pedestrian projects turn downtowns into destinations, and capitalize on increased business activity. * Eliminating the 1.5% of transportation funding spent on bike/ped would have no meaningful impact on the federal budget, but instead, decreases transportation options for American families in a time of rising gas prices and an uncertain economy.
