Hi Everyone, My name is Shah Mohamed. Some of you know me by some other child hood name or nick name. We have all met and hung-out, spent time together sharing an experience or two and in the larger context, shared life. I have great respect and admiration for you all. We all have unique gifts and talents and I hope that every one of you is engaging your talents and gifts living life close to its limits. This is the first time I am sending out an email of this kind. I don't normally don't do this but I need your help. I have for the past year been working at an organization that I believe in. I do work that is rewarding and meaningful to me and from what I can tell is very meaningful to the people I touch. I run a small social enterprise and community space named Bike Works based out of a site called the Evergreen Brick Works<http://ebw.evergreen.ca>. We are an environmental community center. A place where people can gather and explore the ideas and practices of what it means to live more sustainably. Evergreen is a National not for profit charitable organization that helps make cities more livable. We do this using a methodology that focus on Nature, Culture and Community. Acting both onsite at the Evergreen Brick Works<http://ebw.evergreen.ca> and across the country in communities big and small we are helping to build a brighter future based in sustainable and healthy practices. What I need your help doing is raising funds to ensure we can run bike programming for another year. I guess it doesn't normally happen in North America, so if you can make it this year, it might be the last year it's here for a while. i figured some of you might be interested in this, or would know people who are. be safe! josh. Hi Jonathan, Carolyn forwarded this over to me, since she thought this sounded like a membership question. It's been a while since you and I have connected-hope you are doing well. The Advocacy Advance Program was created to draw down federal funding to be spent on biking and walking, so it would be crucial to ensure that an application addresses drawing down federal funding. Any Alliance and League member is welcomed to apply for such funding. With the increasing number of community bike shops (or like organizations) playing an advocacy role in their community, there is definite potential in this area. I don't personally handle the Advocacy Advance Program and Grants, but I have copied Brighid O'Keane, our Advocacy Advance Program Manager, on this email so that you and her can connect to discuss further. I would also like to add that the Alliance for Biking & Walking, in response to member requests from community bikeshops and like organizations, is also investigating other opportunities of better ways to serve such organizations. community bike shops need bikable roads

Fellow community shops, We have been working on a good bikable community since our inception in 1996. We could not in good conscious work on getting more people on bikes without working on city design and street issues. We have had success: changing 4-lane roads to 3-lane roads and putting in bike lanes in the reclaimed space, getting _single lane_ roundabouts instead of stop lights, narrowing 12' travel lanes to 10' which often helps get in bike lanes, changing parking lanes to bike lanes, connecting urban trails and increasing transit for instance. Current projects include getting a downtown 'piazza' or car-free plaza, switching asphalt to pine resin or other alternative for bike walk trails, and- the hardest- working to stop a couple major roadway expansions and instead going with bike/walk/transit solutions. Hey think tank folks- The Alliance for Biking & Walking is in the final weeks of our 2011 Photo Contest — and I wanted to extend an invitation to submit photos of your important work with community bike shops, earn-a-bike programs and other collective efforts. We've got some significant prizes lined up, including a free ($4K-value) biking or walking trip to Italy, that you could use as an auction item or other fundraiser for your initiative. Shop software

Hey folks, for those that are interested I've made some of the first steps in creating a suite of utilities that can be used for all the stuff we need to do on a daily basis. As of right now, I've created some Drupal modules that can be used to administer users and sales, so if you're by chance currently running Drupal 7 and are in need of this kind of thing, then you can probably start getting it set up soon. Eventually I'll be developing this so it can be used on any web site and likely offline too and there will be much more functionality than just shop administration. You can check out the demo version here: test.bikeroot.ca/members/shop. If you want to try it out you'll need to create a fake account, this is only because the system sends automatic emails on registration and purchases which are all directed your account in the demo. There's probably some bugs in there so you'd be doing me a favour by trying it out and giving me feedback if you feel like it. I'm hoping for late spring to be able to release something with basic functionality that can be used by anyone that needs it; that might be optimistic however. At that point I'll hopefully be able to reconnect with some of the developers that met concerning this in San Marcos for help expanding its functionality. .godwin
