Hi All! Interbike's way, way around the corner, September 14th-18th with the Outdoor Demo the two days before. As you probably know, the industry's dog-and-pony show is a great environment for Collectives to meet retailers and shop owners and let them know about all the great ways to get involved with what we do on a local and national level. Last year we didn't get a ticket confirmation until the LAST MINUTE, which was annoying, so I wanted to reach out to the network early this year with two things. 1. Would you like to go and get a (free) ticket through us? 2. What resources should we bring to bear and share with the cycling industry? If you'd like to go, sign up on this sheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ryv4e0wSR21-9LXoMRrLxjHbG6eafAzTmg4…> and fill out the relevant tabs. Going to Interbike with us comes with responsibility: Firstly, everyone attending has to sign up for two shifts at the Bicycle Collective Network booth (third tab below), where we'll be representing the Bicycle Collective and the Alliance for Walking and Biking. Secondly, we will not tolerate conduct that doesn't represent us favorably to the rest of the bicycling industry. Being inconsiderate of an exhibitor's time, heckling for swag or deals from people you haven't developed a relationship with or who haven't clearly offered that sort of thing, or generally behaving like a child will earn you a boot from the show. We're not willing to jeopardize the reputation of the Bicycle Collective Network. Barring major conflicts, we'd also like to do a night out for Collective folks on Tuesday night, the night before the show, where we would briefly go over our responsibilities formally and then just kick back, catch up across the city, state, and national lines between our different shops. For example, the Salt Lake/Ogden/Provo Shop is always looking for (utility) tube sealant donors and companies that make solid tubes. When I find out a company has a distributor in a given area, I try to get their blemished/overstock/recall items donated to local collectives. Youth Leadership Expectations

Hello all! You have all been so helpful in the past regarding our questions about rebuilding our youth programs, and now I ask to lean on your collective experience yet again. Our current questions are: 1. How do you determine the expectations, benefits, boundaries, & consequences of disrespecting those boundaries for youth in your space? For example, in a classroom we might involve all participants in creating a contract together, but in a fluctuating space, where people come and go daily, what is an effective way to have common guidelines that does not disempower youth? 2. Does your organization have a Youth Leadership Program? If so... - How does a young person become involved in leadership? - Has your program changed/grown as it has become more established? What has that journey been like? - Does your program have additional expectations for youth designated as leaders? (i.e. Do they have extra privileges and responsibilities? What kinds of behaviors might put their leadership status in jeopardy?) And last but certainly not least... - *Do standards for their behavior extend beyond the walls of your building? (i.e. Must they be enrolled in school? What if they are seen fighting, bullying, or riding dangerously out in the community? etc.)* Thank you in advance for any/all wisdom you can offer. Does anyone feel that this might be a particularly bad idea? Otherwise, a discussion here on good and bad practices, examples of well written workshop descriptions, or examples of things you have found confusing about the process would be super useful but it would be great if I could also find a volunteer to help write the doc. Aftermarket chainguards for kids' bikes

Folks - I rescue, repair, and donate bikes in Southern New Hampshire. I often get single speed kids' bikes that do not have chainguards. I am afraid that single speed bikes without a chainguard are a potentially unsafe for a younger rider and I will not give them out. So I have 2 questions: 1. Does anyone know of a good source of kid sized aftermarket universal chainguards? 2. Am I being too paranoid? I realize that the kids that get these bikes or their parents can remove the chainguards any time in the future and probably will remove them if they get bent or misaligned. On the other hand, it would only take a second to lose a finger if a kid were to put a finger into a chain ring - I have a scar from a tandem timing chain/chainring that I inadvertently got caught in and it does not take much to cause real damage. Today, PeopleForBikes is opening applications for an ambitious new effort called The Big Jump Project. We are looking for ten great places to join this exciting new project - places where community leaders have ambitious plans to create safe and comfortable places to ride and encourage their neighbors and co-workers to give it a try. We want places that are eager to benchmark their progress and see the benefits of a big jump in biking in healthier people and better communities. Over the next three years, we will work in a diverse portfolio of places, cities, small towns, neighborhoods, suburbs, and downtowns, that have ambitious plans to improve on-the- ground infrastructure and collaborate with the community to get more people on bikes. We are particularly interested in places where bikes can improve access to jobs and opportunity for underserved communities; connect suburban areas to transit hubs and town centers; connect to paths and parks to encourage physical activity, and catalyze the economic potential of tourism. The Big Jump Project builds on the momentum and success of the PeopleForBikes Green Lane Project that helped get protected bike lanes on the ground, into the design toolbox and established them as the gold standard for comfortable biking on busy streets. Abandoned Bike Ordinance?

Greetings! Through the Delta Bike Project in Mobile, Alabama we are working with city leaders and the Mobile Police Department to update certain ordinances that have neglected to meet the needs of our city. One of those ordinances we seek to create is an ordinance that allows the City/Police to recover abandoned bicycles that have been chained up for some (unknown) extended amount of time. We hope that the Delta Bike Project could be the recipient of those bikes for inclusion into our Time is Money Program <http://www.deltabikeproject.org/time-is-money-program/>. It's also a way to clear up our very limited amount of bike parking - something we're also working on through various fundraisers and agreements of understanding to install fixit stations and bike racks. Are there examples from this group of ordinances in your city that allow public safety officials or others to recover abandoned bikes? Do you have examples of that language that you can share? Also, are there other similar ordinances that are good to accompany these? We are lucky to have the ear of the City Leaders and the Police Department, so we would be ever grateful for feedback on this issues. At Reno Bike Project we did public giveaways of light sets (not the best, they were free from the DOT, but better than none). We had them available at our community bike shop and gave them away during 2-3 hour pop-up events in public places (bus stations, popular intersections, university campus) with an RBP brochure and some bike safety literature. Our only rule was that we'd only give one set away per person with their bike (no extra sets for friends who weren't present or without seeing the bike). We also gave a few away to people using wheelchairs, no problem. We had a lot of success in distributing them and talking to/educating passers-by. Unfortunately, we found out after a couple years that the front light wasn't, in fact, bright enough to meet the NRS on bike lights at night, and people were getting ticketed by the cops. So NDOT kind of screwed up on that one. I digress; am attaching the survey we asked recipients to complete in return for their lights. Light giveaway structure

Howdy, I've heard other folks share that they give away headlight or taillights through their programs. Do you have any sort of structure to that? Paperwork? Rules? Guidelines? We are hoping to give away quality light kits that'll be used long term so we are trying to seek out how others have approached similar situations. Has anyone done a Memorandum of Agreement?

Our organization has been asked to come up with an MOA for a bike mechanics education program that we provide to at-risk youth and adults. One of the features of the program, is that we've been able to place at least one of the participants who was unemployed long term before the program in a job at a local bike shop. We also do an earn-a-bike with the participants. It seems like a really good idea to have a boiler plate MOA that we could use when we do elementary school bike clubs (we've done two), and high school earn-a-bike and mechanics programs. Does anyone have an MOA that you've used for similar programs? We don't want to be too rigid and scare partners away, or make it too difficult for ourselves to stick to them. PeopleForBikes "Idea Book" - Survey

Hi everyone - I’ve been a long time subscriber to the list, but I’ve just registered my new email address after taking a job at PeopleForBikes a few months ago. Prior to that, I spent the last ten years running Revolutions Bike Co-Op in Memphis and serving as the Memphis’ Bike/Ped Program Manager. Now, I’m running a new program at PFB which will assist cities in developing robust bicycle programs in diverse neighborhoods. We’ll launch that program in a few weeks and I’ll make another post at that time with full details. In the meantime, we’re working to create an “Idea Book” that will highlight bicycle events in communities across the country that get people on bikes and have other community-driven goals of building support for projects, use of specific trail or bike lane, highlight less than ideal situations for cycling, or target particular populations for increased use of bicycling. I know from experience that community bike programs play a large role in many communities in hosting and leading these events and thought that I could pick your brain and ask what you’re doing in your community. The purpose of the "Idea Book” is to act as a guide for advocacy groups, riding clubs, government agencies and anyone else who want to get more people on bikes. It will feature a list of event types for potential organizers to choose from, as well as descriptions about how those events play into key advocacy strategies for cities and decision-makers. We'd be grateful if you could share the survey link with anyone you know is running a successful bike event or complete the survey yourself for anything you’ve been a part of. One thing to think about. Are there any mobile bike services? If you must buy a piece of real estate, you might not be competitive. But mobile bike repair services which come to you...not very environmental. Below is an update on our progress building a Community Bicycle and Transportation Center in the heart of Missoula. We need help bringing this to fruition! Can you spread this effort to your networks? thanks... --- For Immediate Release: Free Cycles Missoula and Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation Gain Extension for Capital Campaign to July 1st "The Cycles of Change campaign has been sprouting wings with support from thousands of people," said Executive Director, Bob Giordano. "We have raised $125,000 from grassroots efforts, and now we need the help of many more people to secure our home," he goes on to say. While the long term goal is still to raise 1.1 million and buy the property outright, if the non-profit can raise $330,00, or 30%, by the July 1st deadline, then bank financing with a mortgage becomes a viable path to success. Free Cycles has recorded over 200,000 shop visits since 1996, helping 18,000 people earn a free bicycle and teaching 5,000 people laws, safety, and maintenance in the award-winning BikeWell class. Located in the heart of Missoula, the two acre property, which is equivalent to a full city block, is an ideal place to continue the work of Free Cycles and its umbrella organization, the Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation. Both provide essential services to help people get to work, buy groceries, and go about their daily lives in a healthy way. "Once I'm riding the cycle, I'm saving money, saving energy, and saving time. Without a bicycle, it would be difficult to get around the city, for shopping, classes and errands" said Mamunur Rahman, a visiting Humprhey fellow from Bangladesh, who received a free bike from Free Cycles after taking a BikeWell class and volunteering four hours. The location is extremely accessible, being at the union of two primary trails. The plan is to preserve the existing buildings to honor Missoula’s heritage, and eventually transition to 100% renewable energy, thus creating a pathway to a liveable future. Further, the non-profit provides valuable community participation opportunities, from shop enhancements to helping people build bikes to effectively advocating for safe, enjoyable streets and trails. “One reason I love Free Cycles is because I know I can come in to get help, give help, get creative, or talk about ways to make safer streets,” says volunteer Cameron Best. "We have been honored to help Missoula become one of America's great bicycle cities, yet much work remains in order to make the transportation system better for all people," says Giordano. "Missoula has a strong, passionate support network of people and organizations that make it a unique and loveable place to live. Maintaining this property will help ensure the longevity of accessible, equitable, safe, and environmentally sound transportation systems for the Missoula community and beyond,” says Programs Director, Emily Jensen. The plan also includes a community bike share for short term bike lending and a transportation learning center with a focus on growing a healthy city. Over the years, the organization has taught over a hundred interns about transportation topics ranging from policy to how to adjust the spokes of a wheel. Another huge aspect of the non-profit's mission is educating, empowering, and engaging youth. For instance, on Monday, May 23rd, with the help of Bikers Against Bullies USA and the Dixon School District, Free Cycles worked with the entire school of 49 students. Thirty bikes were tuned by volunteers and staff, and during the event students were taught how to fix their own rides. By the end of the day, everyone's hands were dirty, laughter was in the air, Robert finally replaced his stem bolt, and the stoke on bikes was as high as the nearby Mission Mountains. Additionally, the Dixon School now has their very own space dedicated to fixing bikes outfitted with the proper tools. For the past 20 years, Free Cycles has facilitated over 160 school outreach events similar to this. “The demand from the citizens is here. We are bursting at the seams. Here are a couple small, light-hearted ideas I encountered recently. - There's this event called "breakfast on the bridges" and I was reading through their website yesterday and found this: Tardy slips are often available for those who are running late. They may not get you out of trouble, but they'll probably lighten the mood. At least you wont be trying to explain yourself on an empty stomach. - Then just now I saw a photo of someone who had made "bike fairy" lights that said something like "the bike fairy was here" and "may is bike month" and she left them on the bikes at an elementary school. Hello, I'm pleased to announce Queen City Wheel House, Helena, MT's new bike kitchen! We opened our doors last week in a larger warehouse maker space operation in Helena called the MOP (Means of Production) Shop. With the energy, broad skill set, and like-mindedness toward broadening our community, Montana Bicycle Guild brought us in under their 501(c)(3). We are small with limited hours but are excited to grow in volunteers, programming, partnerships, and space. Hi all, Thanks to the guy who answered the phone at the Community Bike Project in Omaha, I found this list which I hope will be helpful in preparing a report that will hopefully lead to funding a major investment in community bike shops in California. I need to include in my report a decent budget estimate for opening and operating a shop, and for the number of bikes that we can reasonably expect to recycle through the shop through earn-a-bike programs and direct sales of donated used bikes. Allen, At Columbus Bike Co-op we have Shop Monitors as well as a full-time staff person (he is paid hourly, and is very underpaid for his experience. We are lucky to have him, and are working on our fundraising so we can pay him more). Shop Monitors help folks fix their bikes and open/close the shop as needed. We also have a Shop Monitor Training Program; this ensures that the Monitors know what they're doing and also draws in more people to volunteer who have an interest in fixing bikes but are not as skilled yet. Our shop is open 2-3 days a week for 3 hours at a time. We are hoping to add another day during the summer that will be staffed with newly trained volunteers. We have an operations committee that handles issues that arise. It meets quarterly. If you are interested, I can connect you with our shop manager. He would be glad to shed some light on more of our operations. All:We are tossing around ideas of how to grow our shop manager roster. For the last 5 years, we have operated Broke Spoke with a Board of Directors, most of whom do mission oriented work but are not involved in the day to day activities of the shop, and a Steering Committee. Our current shop managers are made up from our Steering Committee, all long time volunteers who have agreed to work X number of hours / month and be in charge of opening and closing the shop as a shop manager a minimum of once a month. Currently, the Steering Committee has 4 members and this works well for handling shop related issues / procedures during our monthly steering committee meeting. We currently have 8 people who make up our Committed Volunteers. These folks work a minimum of two shifts / month in exchange for 24 hour access to the shop. We are looking at expanding the number of days we are open but need additional shop managers. Bike storage

Hello Its Raquel from bike collective TigreBici in Monterrey Mexico. We are about to launch a bike system on campus but we have and issue in storage. The initial amount of bikes is 50 and we have around 15 meters to storage at least half of them. Any ideas on how to make it easy to the persons that are going to mount/dismount bicycles and use the space in the best way possible? Regards R.

Hello everyone! Are you ready for Bike!Bike! in Detroit this Fall? Well, I'm ready also, however I'm doing a fundraiser ride from Vancouver, BC Canada to Tijuana, Mexico, I will be leaving during the 3rd week of August 2016 and will not return until late October. The purpose of this fundraiser ride is to provide biking programs for youth in disadvantaged areas within Chicago. The fundraiser will provide funding for them to sustain and/or start their youth based biking programs. The youth of need activities to hep prevent them from getting into trouble or worse. Being involved in a biking program helps them learn discipline, develop thinking skills, problem solving and in some cases business skills. Youths involved in biking can experience different communities and open the world to their dreams and desires.
