community bike shops need bikable roads

Fellow community shops, We have been working on a good bikable community since our inception in 1996. We could not in good conscious work on getting more people on bikes without working on city design and street issues. We have had success: changing 4-lane roads to 3-lane roads and putting in bike lanes in the reclaimed space, getting _single lane_ roundabouts instead of stop lights, narrowing 12' travel lanes to 10' which often helps get in bike lanes, changing parking lanes to bike lanes, connecting urban trails and increasing transit for instance. Current projects include getting a downtown 'piazza' or car-free plaza, switching asphalt to pine resin or other alternative for bike walk trails, and- the hardest- working to stop a couple major roadway expansions and instead going with bike/walk/transit solutions. Shop software

Hey folks, for those that are interested I've made some of the first steps in creating a suite of utilities that can be used for all the stuff we need to do on a daily basis. As of right now, I've created some Drupal modules that can be used to administer users and sales, so if you're by chance currently running Drupal 7 and are in need of this kind of thing, then you can probably start getting it set up soon. Eventually I'll be developing this so it can be used on any web site and likely offline too and there will be much more functionality than just shop administration. You can check out the demo version here: test.bikeroot.ca/members/shop. If you want to try it out you'll need to create a fake account, this is only because the system sends automatic emails on registration and purchases which are all directed your account in the demo. There's probably some bugs in there so you'd be doing me a favour by trying it out and giving me feedback if you feel like it. I'm hoping for late spring to be able to release something with basic functionality that can be used by anyone that needs it; that might be optimistic however. At that point I'll hopefully be able to reconnect with some of the developers that met concerning this in San Marcos for help expanding its functionality. .godwin

Hey all, Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul, MN has become a growing resource for supporting small start-up bike repair programs at schools, community centers, and now potentially the (basement of the) Science Museum of Minnesota! Does anybody have any lists of tools/supplies that provide solid starting direction for a new program? My vision is to have a list of recommended tools that a start-up space might purchase (using wholesale costs) for $1,000 and also a $3,000 or $5,000 level (including more benches, truing stands, etc). This would be very useful for small to medium grant applications without having to reinvent the wheel each time. If anyone has any resources they're generated, I'd welcome the opportunity to review and use it! Seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker for new BNB Project in Uganda Bikes Not Bombs is partnering with St. Mary's Lacor Hospital to launch a new project in Amuru, Northern Uganda to provide bicycles to 300 village health workers. The goal is to improve the health workers' efficiency and productivity in providing health services to people in rural areas of Amuru, with the hope of positively impacting the overall health outcomes in Amuru. In order to do this we must establish the necessary bicycle repair infrastructure in Amuru, train the village health workers in bicycle mechanics, refurbish the bicycles, and prepare the Amuru Village Health Team to sustain the project long-term. Bikes Not Bombs is seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker to help implement this new project in Amuru for a period of 6-9 months starting in January 2012. Winter shut down?

The Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop in Lexington KY has been up and running solidly since last Nov. Our question is, how many shops shut down or tweak their hours during the cold weather months? We do not anticipate closing completely because our shop is used by so many, but we do need to get some rest for the volunteers and work on some education classes. Currently we are open Tuesday 8-11 pm Thursday 6-9 pm Sunday 1-5 pm Currently, thinking about staying open on Sundays during the winter but making Tuesday and education night and then closing on Thursday till spring when we can start to build up a lot of sale bikes. Hi folks- I'm the communication coordinator for the Alliance for Biking & Walking, a coalition of more than 185 state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. The majority of our member organizations are of the standard advocacy model (bike safety classes, encouragement programs, state/local lobbying, policy work, etc) — but there's incredible interest in the energy, power and equity of community bike shops / earn-a-bike / recycle-a-bicycle programs. Several advocates have recently asked me if there are any examples of community bike shop "business plans" that might serve as inspiration or models for, say, a community bike shop in her area of Mississippi. Insurance

I am the president of _www.BikesForTykes.org_ (http://www.BikesForTykes.org) a children's program that refurbishes old bikes into near new condition and then gives them to the underprivileged kids in our area. Even though we are the oldest continuous bike program in the US, we still encounter problems. My question is how most of you handle shop liability and event liability? I see a lot of posting about having kids work on their bikes, however the 'hold not responsible' forms you have people sign just will not do it in a court of law. The only close to 'protected' way is to have shop and event liability through an insurance company and get your 'not hold responsible' forms signed. Even then it is not a 'sure thing'. It all depends on the judge. Has anyone run this by an attorney? What did he/she have to say and where do you get the insurance from? One injury to a child and a parent out to make an example out of any of us and your program is toast!!! I have not got the best answer so I am asking all of you what you have done. Women's Shop Night

Hello Think Tank Collective! We at Mobo are working on trying to get more women to participate in our women's open shop night. We normally have 1 or 2 women or those who gender identify as female come in. Women's night is held once a month, although we are piloting a 2nd day on a weekend to see if we can get more women in. Some of this is a response to request from members to have more weekend shop and a desire to see another women's night. Do you have a lot of attendance at women's open shop (if you have one?) Reddit, a fairly popular online forum/community, is offering $100 in ad credit to nonprofits. They have message boards covering most imaginable topics, including many cycling-related boards (go to http://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling, see list on the right side) and boards for most cities. I'm pretty sure you can set your ads to run on the boards of your choice. It might be helpful if you're looking for a few small donations or more Facebook likes or general buzz for your org. Stolen and Suspicious bikes

I'd like to know what policies shops have in regards to bicycles of suspicious origin (possibly stolen). Here at the bike dump we have a strict policy to not trade or buy bikes. But, we also don't ask or check about nice bikes found in alleys, garbage, donated, or pulled out of the river. We don't usually say anything when someone comes in with a nice bike to fix missing the back wheel and seatpost, or tries to sell a Trek 8000 for $20. I know there are lots of stolen bike registries out there, but do any of the co-ops take the time to check? What do you say when someone brings a bike to fix that was likely stolen at some point? Do you ask for or record serial numbers? Obviously, asking where they got the bike from based on profile alone is a really shitty thing to do. carbon repair

I was lucky enough to be shown carbon fiber fabrication by Craig Calfee, and used the material for awhile to fabricate recumbent racing frames. Easy to use, relatively inert in the various formats available (in many ways what carbon picks up from the fabricator or tools, namely oils, is worse for it than direct contact is for the fabricator) and used in conjunction with epoxy resins (much less noxious than esthers), carbon can be a pleasure to work with. When sanded or cut, it is another thing. The particles are very small and invasive, cause terrible itching and possible rash, potential respiratory irritation and worse. I am encouraged by any attempt to re-use or recycle the material, but really think that the world doesn't need to be using the stuff, and that is why I no longer do. As for repairs, done correctly they work well. Never as elegant as the original, but nonetheless dependable and trustworthy. I, too, think that nothing works as well, for all effected, as steel. Truth seems to be that if we were a tad more creative/resourceful and a lot less acquisitive of shiny, new objects, then we could never make another new bike and be just fine....keep using, repairing, customizing and reconfiguring what exists. As for the potential danger from handling a damaged frame, I would say just don't inject the frame into your abdominal cavity and you will probably be fine :) Touching the stuff, especially any form other than dust, is not an issue. At least that's what I call bikes of carbon-fiber construction... We just got our first one donated due to irreparable frame damage. Sure, we pull the parts from it, but the frame will have to go to landfill. I am wary of the future of bike repair / recycling as c-f becomes more common. Hopefully they'll find ways to recycle this stuff, because I don't know if there'll ever be a safe way of checking these frames for hidden damage. scratching our heads over 501c3!

Hi friends, I'm a volunteer at Recycle-A-Bike here in Providence, RI. We are in the middle of applying for 501c3 status and have hit a few road blocks. I was wondering if any folks have applied for 501c3 or are also in the middle of it, and can offer some advice. Basically, my questions are: - Do any 501c3 shops also have a volunteer point system? At RAB, we award volunteers "points" for putting in time, and they can later cash these points in for used parts or time in the shop. We don't want to get rid of this system, but the IRS finds this problematic for 501c3. - Do any shops sell bikes as a 501c3? Have shops set up both models- such as a for-profit bike shop to sell bikes and an affiliated non-profit to run community programs? So far bike sales keep us sustainable, so we really want to keep this up as a nonprofit. Thanks for any insight! Wow! I never thought I'd receive so many thoughtful answers. We have a metal folding table that we'll bolt a locked donation jar to it, and empty it out and take it to the bank after each workshop. We'll also use a receipt book, which is useful for accounting anyway, and we'll try to incorporate donation requests into our receipts. In response to DancesWithCars, we have business cards and t-shirts on the way (we traded a bike to a screenprinter friend for the shirts!), both hopefully this week once we meet up with our designer friends to work on our logo. We also have a website that helps to vouch for our credibility, with more pictures and a redesign soon, and once we start distributing bikes to established nonprofits, our relationship with them should help as well. We'll also have our 501c3 applied for soon. If anyone else has other ideas on how we can look good and prove our legitimacy, I'm all ears :) Thank you! Weight records- 3 tons?

Our tops so far is about 250 bikes on our big bike trailer- maybe 5000 to 6000 pounds. On that trip i believe we had 2 pedalers on the 3wheel puller, 2 on the back pusher bikes attached to trailer and 2 on each side. We are looking to add 2 more pusher bikes and are always considering a 'team of horses' style front hitch system. We converted an old haywagon. It is also good for parade entries, with bands, bike repair, sculpture, etc. all rolling down the road. We also loan it out so people can move their home in one go. Dear ThinkTank, I am writing to inquire about how any of your organization have dealt with the issuing of assigning value to the services that a non profit community bike space provides (ideally in creative ways outside of our money transaction economy), particularly with pre-teenage youth in urban areas. Troy Bike Rescue functions strictly on donations and a sliding scale pay system where patrons are asked to pay for specific items based on what it is worth to them and what they can afford. This sliding scale pay system applies to the 5 or 6 floor bikes we may have at any one time as well as a small selection of tires, bells, locks, and other very basic bike necessities. What we are struggling with is how to become not just a "place to get your bike fixed for free". How do we handle the swarm of kids, convey a message about WHAT we are doing, and also provide the services needed to keep bikes on the road? thanks ryan troybikerescue

No cash register; how can we accept cash payments without coming off as shady?

Hi all! We're a new bike collective operating out of a 10x10 storage unit. To raise funds, we're selling a few of our nicer bikes on Craigslist at market value, but when someone pays us, I think it looks unprofessional (and perhaps even shady) to just stick the money in one of our pockets. We don't have the space, money or need for a "proper" electronic cash register. In all honesty, after the customer leaves we'll just put it in an envelope and stick it in our pocket until we get to the bank, so this is just a matter of what the customer sees. Here are a few options: * I have a little metal cash box. We could mount it to our tool pegboard and put the money in there, but then again, putting a customer's $100-$300 in a tiny metal cash box in an open space with lots of teenaged volunteers around could look just as bad. * Maybe we'd be best off pulling out an envelope, writing "Bike Broward customer name $100" on it, putting the money inside the envelope and into our pocket, then writing them a receipt on carbon paper? * We could also request payment by check for bikes over, say, $100, but we don't have our 501(c)(3) yet, so it'd have to be in my own name, which isn't a much better option. Am I just overreacting? We're all 18 or younger and won't have our 501(c)(3) for a couple of months, so I've been putting a lot of work into having a reasonably professional appearance. Hello Bike Think Tankers, My excuses for being off-topic, but a Dutch friend of mine has been trying to reach a Californian named Mike Cipolla, who left a very nicely kept 1995-vintage mountain bike on his balcony, five years ago. Mike was supposed to come back for it, someday. About 18 months ago, he and Arie fell out of email contact. Arie tells me that he is pretty sure Mike is/was a professional bike mechanic, and worked in a bike collective of some sort. He is in his late 20s or early 30s. The bike is in excellent condition, the wheels are within a millimeter of being perfectly true. There is also a folding Rhode Gear trailer that goes with it. Arie would like the use of his balcony back, as well as to get back in touch with Mike. Clearly the Univega was well-loved, and we want to make one last effort to find Mike before getting rid of it. Hey Everyone: You may be like me where you once got an email newsletter from the Hub and then one day it disappeared. I was disappointed but eventually I started working here. Registration will begin soon so keep an eye out for that. In October as things slow down at the shop, we are going to clean out the warehouse and have a _benefit concert surrounded by all our bikes_. People seem to like hanging out in our warehouse, hopefully they like rock and roll as well. Look out for that. 3rd Annual Safe Streets Youth Ride Save the Date: Sat. August 20th Hey everyone! It is time to get energized for our big annual ride. There are many more people riding in Detroit now than have in recent memory. There are also many more groups doing rides together. On August 20th we will be gathering in our back alley at noon for our big annual ride. What makes our ride different? Well, the primary focus is our youth. We are inviting all our Youth that have completed the Earn-a-Bike program in the past year to bring those bikes out and ride with us. We hope they bring their families with them so they can all ride together. This will be a slow ride so people of all ages can keep up. Afterwards we will have a parent appreciation BBQ. So what if you didn't participate in Earn-a-Bike? Well, that is the other part that makes our ride unique - it is a fund-raiser to continue the programming that we provide here in the Cass Corridor. If you would like to ride with our youth, please register [5]at our Wepay.com site. Registration is $25, _but if you register before August 13th - registration is only $10._ Again, Youth Earn-a-Bike participants and their families ride free. As of the beginning of August, _our youth programming has gotten over 160 bikes out to kids in Detroit._ Of course, this would never be possible without the over 160 people who donated bikes to us and all the volunteers that have helped out. We still got some time to go and we got a bunch of donations in this week. We'll see how high we can get that number by the end of the year.
