Bike Theft and Selling Locks

1. Are there any shops out there who buy locks in bulk and re-sell them? The rationale for doing this would be that providing a good-quality low-cost lock to people visiting the shop would reduce the likelihood of having their bike stolen. I see the rampant bike-theft here as one of the common reasons people stop cycling or don't want to invest time or money in their bike. My questions are, where do you get locks from, and how is the program run? Are their any other initiatives you take to reduce the problem of bike-theft? Graham @ The Bike-Dump in Winnipeg

Bike coop

Hey Cris, Jessica Jeffers told me that you're running a bike coop in the Have'. I've been looking for an old refurbished commuter bike and was wondering if you had anything. I would also be interested in getting involved in the coop. Let me know what I can do, Noah

Help Whole Foods Keep Promise to Fundraise for Homeless Shelter Bike Shop

Dear friends and neighbors, On Wednesday, September 10, 2008, Whole Foods on Ponce canceled a 5% Day<http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/poncedeleon/community-giving.php>* fundraiser to support an Earn-A-Bike program at Taskforce for the Homeless<http://www.homelesstaskforce.org/>because the Midtown Ponce Security Alliance <http://www.midtownponce.org/> threatened to boycott the store. Sopo Bicycle Cooperative <http://www.sopobikes.org> is a community partner in this project, along with Paideia High School and Americorps. We would like to offer some clarification about the project, and to ask you to support us by asking Whole Foods to reinstate its commitment to Taskforce by rescheduling 5% Day. The Taskforce Earn-A-Bike project was created by a Sopo intern from Paideia High School and an Americorps Volunteer at Taskforce who wanted to make independent transportation accessible for Taskforce Resident Volunteers (people who complete volunteer commitments at the shelter in order to reside there). We all came together to create an on-site bicycle repair shop that provides access to an environmentally responsible form of transportation as well as opportunities to learn marketable skills. Skill building and reliable transportation are necessary for everyday life, and will help our friends at Taskforce access jobs and independent living. Sopo and Taskforce for the Homeless are asking Ponce Whole Foods to reinstate its commitment to Taskforce by rescheduling 5% Day. Our Booth at Interbike 2008

Like last year the Bike Collective Network will have an advocacy booth at Interbike (www.interbike.com) from Sept 24th until Sept 26th. Yes, they scheduled Bike!Bike! on top of it this year. So if you are not planning on going to Bike!Bike! this is a great opportunity for grants, tools, parts, sponsorships, manufacturer seconds, networking, professional workshops that will put your head in a whirl for months, and not to mention tearing up the Vegas strip on a bike. So three things: 1) This booth is for all of us, and people with deep pockets ask where the closest community bike shop for a donation, it is helpful if we can give them your info. So please mail any materials you want handed out before Sept 22nd to: 2312 S. West Temple; Salt Lake City, UT 84115. I can't tell from the bikebike website if there will be any events on Thursday during the day. Our shop is trying to decide when we will leave for san fran. Does anyone know yet how early we should get there, and how late we should stay on sunday? Thanks!

Flying to Bike!Bike! and old schedule from 2007?

Hey! I'm really excited to go to bike!bike! this year but it's on the other side of the country for me, so i'd need to fly. Anyone have any suggestions for cheap flight to get there (i'll be flying out of JFK should I definitely flight to the san francisco airport? or is there a better one?) please lemme know! I also thought about flying standby with airtran ($99 one way, but no guarantee how long i'll wait and they first fly me to atlanta, i believe anyone know any other standby flight options?) but don't know people that have done it, anyone tried this before? ( http://www.airtranu.com/airtran_u.aspx#how) I assume I can get from the airport to the location by public transportation, but i haven't found anything on the website on how to do that, if anyone knows that'd be great to know how to do. Also, i'd really either like to see the work shops being offered this year, or at least see the workshops that were offered last year if anyone has that info, it'd be really helpful for me (especially if i'm going to ask another student organization to pay for me to go). I've been starting this bike collective in new haven, but we are in transition (new location) and should revise our operations significantly so i hear this would be a great thing to attend (right?) and that it'd be worth the money I spend rather than buying more tools for the collective. xoxo cris

This may not be something you can turn your mind to just yet, but... Bill Quigley's "Katrina Pain Index" hit my inbox about seventeen times the week of the anniversary of Katrina. One of the alarming statistics contained in it was that 80% of the pre-Katrina public transit capacity has not been restored. I've cycled in New Orleans in your August heat, and it was a bit much for this Canadian girl-- give me an unplowed winter street any day! Those of you who cycle in that Southern humidity are tough! I've walked long distances in that humidity, too, and it made me so sad to think of people-- particularly old folks and little kids-- walking forever because there are no buses anymore. Fixing the public transit system is going to be a challenge for you all. That stat did make me wonder about whether or not you all or any one in your community had developed a more extensive alternative to the official New Orleans bike plan to help people who do not have cars. If not, do you know what your people and your city needs, can we set up a wiki and help you to develop a great one? Some of us are working with a wiki to design a bike plan for the Detroit-Windsor region, and that model is working well so far. We are developing a plan that contains both items that we, as citizens and denizens, are either already doing or can just start implementing all by ourselves, and things that we can take with us to meetings with all levels of government and with church groups and businesses, etc.. This ground up approach to city transportation plan design is kind of awesome so far; once our bike plan is a little father along, we will formally invite groups like Tansit Riders United, anti-poverty groups, women's groups, and others, to participate with us-- some of us already members of those groups, so those view points are already informally involved. If I can help New Orleans by helping with you develop that sort of plan, it would make me very happy-- so many of the people on this list have mad skills and lots of experience, but not much money to help you in other ways.
