The thread on housing storage reminded me of a shop I visited in
Montreal called SOS Velo. Not so much in terms of parts storage but
in creative ways of using bike parts.
When re-Cycles was entering its partnership with Cycle Salvation the
visit was made so that both orgs. could see a large-scale bicycle
recycling centre in operation. This shop is a fully-funded place
that not only recycles bikes but also provides "a unique program that
ensures the social and professional integration of people who have
trouble finding and keeping jobs".
This places recycles everything! If it can no longer be used on a
bike it gets turned into bike art, and some of it is very cool
indeed. I have a page of photos:

-Take 2x4 and build up at the bottom so it stays uprightI
-drill angled 1" holes into the 2x4 and wiggle the bit around a bit
-slide in the steerer end of of some scrap forks into the holes.
ta-da! you have a very cool bikey cable spooler / coat rack / etc.

Subject: Volunteers needed Saturday, May 22, 10-1...
To:
*Volunteers Needed!*
* *
*Who*: Folks who know anything about bicycle repairs, even if you just know
how to fix a flat!
*When*: Saturday, May 22, 2010, 10am-1pm;
*What*: Inner City Health Center’s 11th Annual Kid’s Fair. Last year, we
turned around 450 bicycles, helmets & locks, and it gets bigger every year.
It’s a great way to help many families who otherwise would have limited
resources to obtain bicycles. Some of the donated bicycles are ready to go,
some need minor repairs and/or adjustments, and some are not worth fixing
but we use them for parts bikes. There are other events going on; a bicycle
obstacle course, live music, the police and fire department, sno-cones and
cotton candy, health oriented booths, but the bicycle give-away is the
biggest draw. We provide YOU volunteers with fun, food and drinks,
bicycles, parts, supplies and compressed air. If you can, please bring a
repair stand, basic tools and friends! Please also pass this flyer on to
others! THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN; IT COULDN’T HAPPEN
WITHOUT YOU!!!
*Where*: We hit a different school each year; this year we will be at
Swansea Elementary School, 4650 Columbine Street, Denver, CO 80216. From
I-70 & York, go north on York and take your first right in less than a block
on Steavenson Place. Go two blocks east and take a left on Columbine
street. Swansea is ½ block north on the east side of the street.
*To Volunteer:* Please contact Laura Alden, contact information below. She
is trying to keep track of the volunteers.

Hey Everyone.
Hope those of you getting the snow are staying dry and warm...
Community Cycles in Boulder has just wrapped up phase one of a huge remodel.
We tore out some walls, are putting in a nice retail front end showroom, and
things are really coming together. We had tons of help from volunteers, and
Chris from the Park Hill Bike Depot in Denver came up and moved some
electrical work for us. Amazing.
Anyway, here's a pretty cool photo of one of the upgrades. We dissassembled
some old used cassettes, and used the cogs as stencils:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/timandmegan/4342867368/
We'll be posting a ton of photos once the whole thing is done, but it's
coming along. Those of you coming to Mountain States Bike!Bike! in a few
weeks will get to see it all.
Thanks to Dave Tegart (subtlet on flickr) for his amazing photo work.
josh.
Part of the criteria for this Program Director position is the ability to
remember to include attachments in emails. See attached job description.

Quad Bikes is Hiring a New Manager!
Founded in 2003, Quad Bikes has provided repairs and quality refurbished
and new bicycles to the Harvard University community ever since. We are
presently looking for an operations manager to handle the administrative
side of the shop.
Enthusiasm for cycling is a must, but experience repairing bicycles is
an asset, not a necessity. Training in bicycle repair will be available.
Candidates will benefit from past work in a non-profit environment and
being organized, efficient and reliable. Familiarity with Quickbooks and
non-profit incorporation and law will also be major assets. The job will
entail considerable interaction with customers so a friendly and
approachable attitude is a must.
The position will entail meeting with a number of on-campus offices on a
regular basis, such as Commuter Choice, Harvard Recycling and the
Harvard Police. Quad Bikes is responsible for the tagging and removal of
abandoned bikes left on campus. The job will entail organizing this
program with The Harvard administration. Quad Bikes refurbishes many of
these bikes to be sold.
The position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable
experience running a non-profit bike shop, while working with a group of
young people passionate about biking. We are looking
for an individual with a strong sense of customer service, good
organizational skills and supervisory experience to manage everything
from day-to-day operations to long-term planning. Specific areas of
responsibility will be: managing a small team of young people,
maintaining the shop website and mailing list, ordering parts and
supplies, paying taxes and bills, and maintaining payroll and finances.
We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.
Email your resume and cover letter to info(a)quadbikes.org
<mailto:info@quadbikes.org> and you can contact us at 617-496-5955 with
any questions. Cover letters should be addressed to Alex Gatien and
David Tillman Tucker.
Compensation: $15 per hour
Hours per week: 35-40
Benefits: Health and dental insurance, all the wholesale bike parts you
can shake a stick at.
