Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. I'm thinking about including a page that gives tips and maybe an outline for attendees writing workshop proposals for this year's Bike!Bike!. Does anyone feel that this might be a particularly bad idea? Otherwise, a discussion here on good and bad practices, examples of well written workshop descriptions, or examples of things you have found confusing about the process would be super useful but it would be great if I could also find a volunteer to help write the doc. Aftermarket chainguards for kids' bikes

Folks - I rescue, repair, and donate bikes in Southern New Hampshire. I often get single speed kids' bikes that do not have chainguards. I am afraid that single speed bikes without a chainguard are a potentially unsafe for a younger rider and I will not give them out. So I have 2 questions: 1. Does anyone know of a good source of kid sized aftermarket universal chainguards? 2. Am I being too paranoid? I realize that the kids that get these bikes or their parents can remove the chainguards any time in the future and probably will remove them if they get bent or misaligned. On the other hand, it would only take a second to lose a finger if a kid were to put a finger into a chain ring - I have a scar from a tandem timing chain/chainring that I inadvertently got caught in and it does not take much to cause real damage. Over the next three years, we will work in a diverse portfolio of places, cities, small towns, neighborhoods, suburbs, and downtowns, that have ambitious plans to improve on-the- ground infrastructure and collaborate with the community to get more people on bikes. Abandoned Bike Ordinance?

Greetings! Through the Delta Bike Project in Mobile, Alabama we are working with city leaders and the Mobile Police Department to update certain ordinances that have neglected to meet the needs of our city. One of those ordinances we seek to create is an ordinance that allows the City/Police to recover abandoned bicycles that have been chained up for some (unknown) extended amount of time. We hope that the Delta Bike Project could be the recipient of those bikes for inclusion into our Time is Money Program <http://www.deltabikeproject.org/time-is-money-program/>. It's also a way to clear up our very limited amount of bike parking - something we're also working on through various fundraisers and agreements of understanding to install fixit stations and bike racks. Are there examples from this group of ordinances in your city that allow public safety officials or others to recover abandoned bikes? Do you have examples of that language that you can share? Also, are there other similar ordinances that are good to accompany these? We are lucky to have the ear of the City Leaders and the Police Department, so we would be ever grateful for feedback on this issues. At Reno Bike Project we did public giveaways of light sets (not the best, they were free from the DOT, but better than none). We had them available at our community bike shop and gave them away during 2-3 hour pop-up events in public places (bus stations, popular intersections, university campus) with an RBP brochure and some bike safety literature. Our only rule was that we'd only give one set away per person with their bike (no extra sets for friends who weren't present or without seeing the bike). We also gave a few away to people using wheelchairs, no problem. We had a lot of success in distributing them and talking to/educating passers-by. Unfortunately, we found out after a couple years that the front light wasn't, in fact, bright enough to meet the NRS on bike lights at night, and people were getting ticketed by the cops. So NDOT kind of screwed up on that one. I digress; am attaching the survey we asked recipients to complete in return for their lights. Light giveaway structure

Howdy, I've heard other folks share that they give away headlight or taillights through their programs. Do you have any sort of structure to that? Paperwork? Rules? Guidelines? We are hoping to give away quality light kits that'll be used long term so we are trying to seek out how others have approached similar situations. Has anyone done a Memorandum of Agreement?

Our organization has been asked to come up with an MOA for a bike mechanics education program that we provide to at-risk youth and adults. One of the features of the program, is that we've been able to place at least one of the participants who was unemployed long term before the program in a job at a local bike shop. We also do an earn-a-bike with the participants. It seems like a really good idea to have a boiler plate MOA that we could use when we do elementary school bike clubs (we've done two), and high school earn-a-bike and mechanics programs. Does anyone have an MOA that you've used for similar programs? We don't want to be too rigid and scare partners away, or make it too difficult for ourselves to stick to them. PeopleForBikes "Idea Book" - Survey

Hi everyone - I’ve been a long time subscriber to the list, but I’ve just registered my new email address after taking a job at PeopleForBikes a few months ago. Prior to that, I spent the last ten years running Revolutions Bike Co-Op in Memphis and serving as the Memphis’ Bike/Ped Program Manager. Now, I’m running a new program at PFB which will assist cities in developing robust bicycle programs in diverse neighborhoods. We’ll launch that program in a few weeks and I’ll make another post at that time with full details. In the meantime, we’re working to create an “Idea Book” that will highlight bicycle events in communities across the country that get people on bikes and have other community-driven goals of building support for projects, use of specific trail or bike lane, highlight less than ideal situations for cycling, or target particular populations for increased use of bicycling. I know from experience that community bike programs play a large role in many communities in hosting and leading these events and thought that I could pick your brain and ask what you’re doing in your community. The purpose of the "Idea Book” is to act as a guide for advocacy groups, riding clubs, government agencies and anyone else who want to get more people on bikes. It will feature a list of event types for potential organizers to choose from, as well as descriptions about how those events play into key advocacy strategies for cities and decision-makers. We'd be grateful if you could share the survey link with anyone you know is running a successful bike event or complete the survey yourself for anything you’ve been a part of. Im looking for some examples of bike build sheet or forms that folks use either for shop builds or build/earn-a-bike programming (i.e volunteer use OR participant use). I have a form that we use at Bike Pirates that we stole from Recycle a Bicycle in Ottawa many years ago, but I'd like to see some other examples for a youth program I now run. One thing to think about. Are there any mobile bike services? If you must buy a piece of real estate, you might not be competitive. But mobile bike repair services which come to you...not very environmental. We have no knowledge of active co ops in these two countries and we have found some groups of cycle activists but some of you might have knowledge of more informations through travel or work experience ? Below is an update on our progress building a Community Bicycle and Transportation Center in the heart of Missoula. We need help bringing this to fruition! Can you spread this effort to your networks? thanks... --- For Immediate Release: Free Cycles Missoula and Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation Gain Extension for Capital Campaign to July 1st "The Cycles of Change campaign has been sprouting wings with support from thousands of people," said Executive Director, Bob Giordano. "We have raised $125,000 from grassroots efforts, and now we need the help of many more people to secure our home," he goes on to say. While the long term goal is still to raise 1.1 million and buy the property outright, if the non-profit can raise $330,00, or 30%, by the July 1st deadline, then bank financing with a mortgage becomes a viable path to success. Free Cycles has recorded over 200,000 shop visits since 1996, helping 18,000 people earn a free bicycle and teaching 5,000 people laws, safety, and maintenance in the award-winning BikeWell class. Located in the heart of Missoula, the two acre property, which is equivalent to a full city block, is an ideal place to continue the work of Free Cycles and its umbrella organization, the Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation. Both provide essential services to help people get to work, buy groceries, and go about their daily lives in a healthy way. "Once I'm riding the cycle, I'm saving money, saving energy, and saving time. Without a bicycle, it would be difficult to get around the city, for shopping, classes and errands" said Mamunur Rahman, a visiting Humprhey fellow from Bangladesh, who received a free bike from Free Cycles after taking a BikeWell class and volunteering four hours. The location is extremely accessible, being at the union of two primary trails. The plan is to preserve the existing buildings to honor Missoula’s heritage, and eventually transition to 100% renewable energy, thus creating a pathway to a liveable future. Further, the non-profit provides valuable community participation opportunities, from shop enhancements to helping people build bikes to effectively advocating for safe, enjoyable streets and trails. “One reason I love Free Cycles is because I know I can come in to get help, give help, get creative, or talk about ways to make safer streets,” says volunteer Cameron Best. "We have been honored to help Missoula become one of America's great bicycle cities, yet much work remains in order to make the transportation system better for all people," says Giordano. "Missoula has a strong, passionate support network of people and organizations that make it a unique and loveable place to live. Maintaining this property will help ensure the longevity of accessible, equitable, safe, and environmentally sound transportation systems for the Missoula community and beyond,” says Programs Director, Emily Jensen. Jensen elaborates: “Having a permanent hub to continue our work will increase capacity, strengthen our programs, and improve our efficacy. Under Free Cycles ownership, the land and buildings will be transitioned into replicable models of ways to address difficult societal challenges such as climate change, social justice, and urban growth. Our current transportation system tends to marginalize low-income people and create a culture of segregation. This project aims to reverse that dynamic and continue to build a more positive future. The local array of community services is gaining strength. The Poverello, PEAS Farm, Home Resource, MUD, and Food Bank have all recently secured a home. Free Cycles Missoula is a vital next success story." Property ownership would also help Free Cycles bring to fruition a fabrication center for helping those with mobility challenges and turning scrap metal into useful tools. The plan also includes a community bike share for short term bike lending and a transportation learning center with a focus on growing a healthy city. Over the years, the organization has taught over a hundred interns about transportation topics ranging from policy to how to adjust the spokes of a wheel. Another huge aspect of the non-profit's mission is educating, empowering, and engaging youth. For instance, on Monday, May 23rd, with the help of Bikers Against Bullies USA and the Dixon School District, Free Cycles worked with the entire school of 49 students. Thirty bikes were tuned by volunteers and staff, and during the event students were taught how to fix their own rides. By the end of the day, everyone's hands were dirty, laughter was in the air, Robert finally replaced his stem bolt, and the stoke on bikes was as high as the nearby Mission Mountains. Additionally, the Dixon School now has their very own space dedicated to fixing bikes outfitted with the proper tools. For the past 20 years, Free Cycles has facilitated over 160 school outreach events similar to this. “The demand from the citizens is here. We are bursting at the seams. It is critical we own the property to expand our space and programs. Land is the medium for service,” says Giordano.
