Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. How Were Your Organizational Transitions?

I’m interested to hear from people whose organizations made transitions from: volunteer-centric to staff-centric all-donation to grant-(or retail-)funded consensus-run to exclusive/majoritarian board (or something else) In particular what were peoples’ objections to the transition? What problems or pitfalls were there? Did the shop lose its independence? What net-negatives were there (even if overwhelmingly outweighed by all the positives?) Remote Learning in the Age of Coronavirus

Hi. I run an in school Earn-A-Bike and open workshop program in Lowell, Massachusetts. All schools in Massachusetts, including the Lowell Public Schools, are closed for the remainder of the school year. Schools are moving to remote learning plans. How to adapt? What are your suggestions on creating remote learning programs and activities that engage students in cycling during the summer months (and possibly during the next school year)? Some students have access to bikes. Some do not. For students that do have bikes, many of their bikes are in disrepair. I'm sitting on a sizable inventory of donated bicycles that need refurbishment. We are in the planning stage of our 3rd *Kickstarter* publishing venture, this time centered around *bicycles / women / emancipation*. And we are looking for a particular kind of contribution. Conceived here, in Montreal, but with collaborators all over Europe and Americas, our two previous Kickstarter projects (here http://tiny.cc/3k4ymz and here http://tiny.cc/zl4ymz) were very much concerned with strong social issues - Spanish Civil War, women combating fascism and their role in resistance. This new undertaking looks to bring together the utilitarian object that is the bicycle with practical paper-based artifacts, like calendars and playing cards. These two are then editorially balanced by a book, designed to celebrate the bicycle as a symbol and facilitator of the women’s emancipation movement. Send us a cycling-inspired street-graffiti photo. Or multiple photos / of multiple graffiti, from your city walls, ideally including permission or, at least, the artist name, if known, in order to credit the work. Please specify which name you’d like to be credited to in your email. We will integrate them in the calendar design, and will feature the name or image of the organization of your choice on the Kickstarter crowdfunding and our own social media platforms. BBP is seeking a Shifting Gears Coordinator to lead our programming partnership with the Idaho Department of Corrections. Reports to: Executive Director Classification: Full Time Exempt, plus Benefits Salary Range: $31,200 - $33,280 depending on experience Weekly Schedule: Will included some nights and weekends In 2017, BBP created Shifting Gears, a groundbreaking program to teach incarcerated women how to fix kids' bicycles while earning a bicycle for future transportation needs. In 2020, BBP secured grant funding to expand Shifting Gears to the Idaho Department of Corrections men’s facilities. This program is called Project Kickstand and lives under the umbrella of Shifting Gears programming. Because men incarcerated at this facility generally serve much longer sentences than the women in our Shifting Gears program, there is a new opportunity to build in a certified vocational training program that will lead to future job placement while significantly increasing the amount of bicycles BBP provides to teens. BBP’s Shifting Gears Coordinator will manage all aspects of both the men’s and women’s programs. Hey Kim, Just responding about your Thinktank posting about outdoor bike repair stations. I work for Intercity Transit in Olympia, WA. We experimented with a public tool station mounted at our main transit center. It was removed maybe a month or so after it was installed. It quickly became a bicycle chop-shop for folks in our community, particularly outside of our hours of operation. Two things I would recommend for a public tool station are... 1) Make it secure, but movable. Or it could be in a lockable closest/cage/space. It is difficult to foster a positive use of this resource when no staff is around. 2) Have clearly posted rules about use. I'd recommend listing allowed repairs, or time limits. We had regulars who would camp out at the stand making it unusable for others needing quick fixes. Online Collaborative Workshop on Safe & Effective Shop Operations

I wanted to invite the bike collective community to a collaborative online workshop to make a bit more sense of operating safely & effectively both in the short and long terms, volunteer management, and shop's capacity for providing services. Day: Friday June 12 Time: 3pm Central Time This will be a three-part structured workshop where participants will be paired up with each other and begin to chart the trends they are seeing. We will then look at these as a group. The second part will be working together in small groups to sort out what services you feel are critical to address, the activities to make them happen, and what the cultural aspects for each will be. The final part will be individual or by shop, by focusing on who it is you are serving, what you are offering them, the opportunities there, and the risks involved. I realize that some shops have already figured this stuff out, but I know there are several that are still struggling with it. This is to help them. It would be great to have participants who can share how they have worked things out. It is a 45 minute long workshop. Bike Storage Optimization

Hi. I am a member of The Bike Connector, an earn-a-bike and bike collective program in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. We recently gained access to container (12m L x 2.3m W x 2.26m H; 40' L x 7.6' W x 7.4' H) to help manage our inventory of bikes and parts. I want to maximize the capacity of the container, while allowing for easy access to the bikes. I'm sure others have solved this optimization problem. Any suggestions for how to organize this space? Looking for Assistance With Friday's Safe & Effective Shop Operations Workshop

Hi Everyone! Wow! I am blown away by how many shops are wanting to participate. There are almost 30 shops from across the US, Canada, and Australia! The more shops participating then a bigger look at the trends can happen. To be able to best facilitate this, I could use the help of a couple of volunteers for the following roles: - Task: You keep us on track, on schedule, and monitor the clock. - Reflecting: You monitor the chat for questions so nobody gets left behind - Growth: You assist helping people with getting their ideas down, using the tools (Freehand, Zoom, Trend Matrix, Offering-Activity-Culture Map), encourage collaboration, get people out of their heads. Hi Wade, everyone. I converted a 10x30ft shipping container for our solar powered workshop. Everything we create is open source, not had time/capacity to get the build online yet but happy to share how we built it/photos/etc. Essentially I built a timber frame inside with rockwool insulation, clad this with 18mm ply (9mm is adequate but I had to work with what I could get), fitted 6 x 250W solar panels on the roof and built a power unit incorporating an isolator switch, leading to a Victron Energy charge controlled to feed 2 x 100Ah Lead Crystal batteries in a vented secure workbench. All workbenches, toolboards built from same materials, surfaces on the main benches 3mm aluminium sheeting, dibond on two [upcycled building hoardings]. Hopefully you're able to get the word out to identify the guy in this post: https://twitter.com/VicStoddard/status/1268620623489560576 This scumbag was a spandie cyclist on the Capital Crescent Trail, riding near the Dalecarlia tunnel. He physically attacked two children who were posting George Floyd memorial flyers. Don't know much more about it. If this guy was from my town, I'd likely recognize his bike at least. As cyclists and mechanics, we're the people who'd be best at identifying one of our own. By "one of our own", I mean a cyclist, not a bigoted brute. ~cyclista Nicholas
