That which has value is valuable, though resources and availability to pay differs, especially in times of great uncertainty and instability. What would be useful would be transparency of the costs involved, knowledge that everything created and built is, and stays within, the public domain for public benefit (if that's the intention?), a sliding scale from $0-?? providing inclusive access and/or if consultancy work is to be garnered off the back of this, that organisations should perhaps be paid rather than pay for attendance - with funding for costs found from the facilitator as this would effectively be R&D for his private consultancy business. Doesn't sound like this is the intention but there did seem to be a lack of transparency, perhaps due to brevity and time pressure/focus in delivery to organisations asap. I think the concept is great, value high and work much needed. Pre-workshop, I would also solicit and include research that organisations are already doing from attendance of business, governmental and educational workshops, webinars, events etc + any personal study and research to build a resource base for trends and info on social, political, economic and technological driving forces that is and stays within the public domain for access of all groups and organisations. I think I sent you through some of this Robert when you emailed me? Why we work within a gift economy, why everything is open source, why we're moving to zero waste etc... If not, pm me with what you feel would be most useful and I'll share resources I've garnered that may be helpful to the workshop group. Building something virtual here in the UK for similar ends, but as ever, also 1000 other things demanding time/resource priority, especially atm. What informed and continues to inform in my work within Active Mobilty and life in general is where we need to head as a global society, of one human race, who share one planet and are tasked with stewardship of it, each other, and all sentient life.... challenging the prevailing narrative of ownership and extraction. Quite simply, we need to move from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance, we need to dismantle private profit at public risk/expense and practially rewrite many of our stories that are not in alignment with a heart-centred life....the head has had too much focus over the last 200yrs and it's too out of balance! recalled bikes and components

How often do you all check for recalled items on the old bikes? Been seeing these recalled Shimano cranks show up on bikes we've taken in recently: https://www.facebook.com/bikex.org/posts/1425107737695385 Since finding 3 pairs in two months, I printed the recall notice images and put them in the shop to help others find them. Thankfully Shimano is still replacing them. I also have been looking out for recalled Suntour forks <https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2014/scott-trek-recall-bicycles-with-sr-suntou…>, but haven't seen one yet. What else do you guys check for? Do you see anything often? How do you educate staff/volunteers on such recalls? From there we will determine which of these are stable and which are uncertain. The most important of these will be used as we describe what four possible futures may look like. Conflict due to COVID

Hey all, My name is Aaron. I volunteer at the Davis Bike Church in Davis, CA. I was wondering if there are any other collectives experiencing intensely conflicting views on how to respond to the pandemic. I am looking for suggestions on how to present a safe new operating model so that those who are more at risk can agree to the shop being open (in some capacity). My experience is that there is a spectrum of approaches to operating under COVID and it is difficult to find a middle ground where a consensus can be made among collective members. It’s true, people’s lives are at risk. But also there are needs in the community that can outweigh the risk associated with (safe) operation. It just depends on how you look at it. The stakes are definitely high and it is a touchy, if not politicized topic. I would love to hear other people’s experiences, and if they are stuck like us or if they have figured out a new operating model that works for them. Also interested to hear about what it took, from a people/core member perspective, to get to the other side of the COVID lockdown. Thanks a ton. Aaron

How to order low priced bike supplies through a distributor?

Hi, I volunteer with Bikes del Pueblo, a volunteer-run non-profit bike collective in San Diego, CA. We teach bike mechanics and offer very low priced, free, or donation based used bikes and parts. We want to find a bike supply distributor (such as JBI, QBP, etc) to work with to start ordering bike supplies, tubes, and parts at their wholesale prices. I've been finding that these companies ask for an application to be completed first with required documents like a state sales tax certificate, license for selling and repairing bikes, and other stuff that bike shops would have but we don't have any of. We have insurance, 501c3 non-profit status, and a space to operate out of, but don't do sales tax, don't have licenses, and don't have a formal sales floor vs repair areas. Would other bike coops/collectives have recommendations of wholesale bike distributors to get in touch with for ordering that would accept collectives like ours without needing to be a standard style bike shop or have all those official documents? Developing a Better Sense of the Future

Hello Everyone, If you were to look into the future to develop a solution to a current challenge, what would that challenge be? One that stood out from the Safe and Effective Operations Workshop is around the capacity to provide services where shops are facing an increased need from communities while facing internal challenges to be able to safely help. In other words - An inaccessible resource is not a resource. I understand that there are some serious social issues around equity and diversity that may be more important to be addressed.
