by waymond smith 30 Jul '17

Hello everyone, I have a friend who wants to attend BikeBike in Winnipeg in August. My friend is very active in community biking and has been "under the weather" for quite a while and is experiencing some difficulty in financially. I'm looking for someone who will be driving from Chicago to Winnipeg and is willing to take my friend, this person is very affable and outgoing. I will pick up the expenses in order for this person to attend. I will be attending, however I will be taking Amtrak to Fargo,ND and continuing the ride via bike. If any bike organizations or individuals are able to assist in this, please contact me privately. Thank you May Peace Go With You Waymond Smith waymondhsmith(a)gmail.com 773-972-4562

Hi All, I would like to thank all the people so far who have replied with suggestions on new premises. We have taken ideas from everyone who has replied both here and directly to myself. When we finish moving which may take a while I will post pictures and a link and I am sure everyone will see some idea that they have contributed. Geoff Smart Back2Bikes Port Melbourne Australia

Hi Geoff I've just setup new premises in a self-converted 30ft x 10ft shipping container in the Olympic Park, London, UK. I visited Condor Cycles, Cloud 9 Cycles, Soho Cycles and a few others that are deemed the best of the best in London to ask if I could photo their workshops and get advice. All were very helpful and because my business runs on a gift economy and open source, all were happy for me to photo their workshops and talk me through what worked and why. What I found: * vertical storage (if safe and you have height) good * keeping only what is needed most to hand, the rest further away (minimal movement wasted) * dedicated bench/toolboard for facing/setting tools with a grinding wheel (if possible) and heavy bench vice * lots of space needed to store completed bikes/bikes awaiting service? Make a scaffolding rail & use meathooks - slide the bikes like clothes on a clothing rail! * double-sided stands are brilliant for frame swapouts and saving space (if you have the width) * paint benches and tool/shadowboards black - easy to find tools, looks good, stays looking good even when dirty * PVC piping with angle bend is a great way of storing cable inners! What I also did * long shipping containers are dark - I installed a 2.5kW solar system on the roof for internal LED spots and striplights - make sure benches are well lit and lit in a way as to avoid glare * I didn't have budget for proper storage and benches so bought cheap 2nd hand stackable plastic storage bin boxes and built benches from plywood to exactly fit these (with 1/2" gap around each) * Benches with tops deeper than the bench width means you can get your feet right up to the bench * Used a few interior design tricks to make the space appear bigger - racks/storage mounted off the floor - white wherever possible (especially ceiling)....would have uplighters too if more power (our projects runs off-grid) Other thoughts * sliding doors? use this space for your safety posters and legal stuff (we need HSE posters, fire safety and company documentation displayed in UK) - or more storage if sliding mechanism can cope * ensure there is adequate space to move around - a good rule of thumb is 60cm-70cm gap * have a mix of new and parts used by volunteers/staff? colour code storage bins/boxes - one for old, one for new * easy clean/non-slip flooring is a worthy investment * parts washer great if you have chance to get one Warmest regards, *Lawrence Mohammed* Director/Head Mechanic *+44 (0)77 222 58587* *probikeservice.co.uk <https://probikeservice.co.uk>* *facebook.com/probikeservice <https://www.facebook.com/professionalbikeservice>* /[Location, NOT delivery address] Pro Bike Service C.I.C. While hot during the summer, the extreme temperatures last less than 3 months and the mild winters more than make up for it. We're anticipating that while the other shops experience slow periods from November-April, St. George BC will continue operations without much interruption. And it is a biking hotspot with hundreds of miles of MTB trails in the region as well as far stretching and low-traffic pavement through some of the most varied terrains in the country in all directions. The UDOT region covering St. George is known for spending more on bicycle infrastructure than any other region in Utah. And it's less than a 2 hour drive to Las Vegas, for what that's worth. This position is best suited to a candidate who works well with minimal direct supervision and who seeks an interesting challenge with freedom to carry out creative solutions to unforseeable challenges. Support will be available 24/7 from myself, many mentors, and local contacts, but with 4 hours of freeway between SLC and St. George, the Location Director will be working in something of an island. I, for one, would love that. I'm sure there are others on this list that would, too. Interested candidates should check out the attached job description and BC programs description. For those planning to ride up or drive up to Bike!Bike! via middle-Americaland we've got some contacts in Fargo and Minneapolis who can help advise on who is coming and going when, such that y'all might link up and/or have some resources about staying in Fargo or Minne. Contact Sara in Fargo sarawatsoncurry(a)gmail.com Or Casey in Minneapolis casey(a)thehubbikecoop.biz Heads up; the ride north from the border to Winnipeg along Hwy 59 is kinda meh and the last time I did it along Hwy 59 (11 years ago now...) the road was pretty crappy with no shoulder. Hwy 216 might be better but I haven't ever rode it south of Grunthal. That said the ride from Minneapolis to Thief river falls is fantastic with lots of beautiful paved rail trails. I'll try to gather more intel on an ideal route in the coming weeks. Look forward to see y'all here in Wpg!
