At Reno Bike Project we did public giveaways of light sets (not the best, they were free from the DOT, but better than none). We had them available at our community bike shop and gave them away during 2-3 hour pop-up events in public places (bus stations, popular intersections, university campus) with an RBP brochure and some bike safety literature. Our only rule was that we'd only give one set away per person with their bike (no extra sets for friends who weren't present or without seeing the bike). We also gave a few away to people using wheelchairs, no problem. We had a lot of success in distributing them and talking to/educating passers-by. Unfortunately, we found out after a couple years that the front light wasn't, in fact, bright enough to meet the NRS on bike lights at night, and people were getting ticketed by the cops. So NDOT kind of screwed up on that one. I digress; am attaching the survey we asked recipients to complete in return for their lights. Light giveaway structure

Howdy, I've heard other folks share that they give away headlight or taillights through their programs. Do you have any sort of structure to that? Paperwork? Rules? Guidelines? We are hoping to give away quality light kits that'll be used long term so we are trying to seek out how others have approached similar situations. Has anyone done a Memorandum of Agreement?

Our organization has been asked to come up with an MOA for a bike mechanics education program that we provide to at-risk youth and adults. One of the features of the program, is that we've been able to place at least one of the participants who was unemployed long term before the program in a job at a local bike shop. We also do an earn-a-bike with the participants. It seems like a really good idea to have a boiler plate MOA that we could use when we do elementary school bike clubs (we've done two), and high school earn-a-bike and mechanics programs. Does anyone have an MOA that you've used for similar programs? We don't want to be too rigid and scare partners away, or make it too difficult for ourselves to stick to them. But we also need to get an idea of what should be covered and how specific and binding an MOA needs to be. Thanks in advance, Randi Direct email Randi(a)hjfw.org

insurance for bike valet

Bicycling for Louisville can't seem to find the special event overage it needs to enter a contract with a local festival to park about 500/day for 3 days. Any leads appreciated. PeopleForBikes "Idea Book" - Survey

Hi everyone - I’ve been a long time subscriber to the list, but I’ve just registered my new email address after taking a job at PeopleForBikes a few months ago. Prior to that, I spent the last ten years running Revolutions Bike Co-Op in Memphis and serving as the Memphis’ Bike/Ped Program Manager. Now, I’m running a new program at PFB which will assist cities in developing robust bicycle programs in diverse neighborhoods. We’ll launch that program in a few weeks and I’ll make another post at that time with full details. In the meantime, we’re working to create an “Idea Book” that will highlight bicycle events in communities across the country that get people on bikes and have other community-driven goals of building support for projects, use of specific trail or bike lane, highlight less than ideal situations for cycling, or target particular populations for increased use of bicycling. I know from experience that community bike programs play a large role in many communities in hosting and leading these events and thought that I could pick your brain and ask what you’re doing in your community. The purpose of the "Idea Book” is to act as a guide for advocacy groups, riding clubs, government agencies and anyone else who want to get more people on bikes. It will feature a list of event types for potential organizers to choose from, as well as descriptions about how those events play into key advocacy strategies for cities and decision-makers. We'd be grateful if you could share the survey link with anyone you know is running a successful bike event or complete the survey yourself for anything you’ve been a part of. Attached is our Build-a-Bike worksheet from Bike Saviours in Tempe, AZ. The second attachment is a checklist printed on the back of the worksheet and is used by a Big Wrench to go over all the major adjustments and perform a test ride. I hope this is helpful!
