We do not use waivers--our insurance company does not pressure us to because they do not stand up in court. Personally, I also feel they are quite problematic because they make people believe they do not have rights when they actually do. It is the legal equivalent of gas lighting. Here in Canada we are a lot less litigious than folks in the US so I think its also seen as less of an issue. We do have Directors and Officers insurance. Its pretty affordable for the protections it offers. Our insurance for liability and D&O is around $2,500 annually. Two questions for y'all along the insurance thread: How did you determine that your insurance *does* indeed cover DIY repairs? Seems like a lot of legalese in our General Liability Insurance that is pretty incomprehensible. Also, for those with a Board, do you have Directors & Officers Insurance? When our shop suspended DIY repair to patrons as a result of the lockdowns, I checked to see that our insurance covered not only DIY repairs but also staff-made repairs and it does. Our liability has never been challenged, though I wouldn't mind paring down our waiver, too. I've attached ours and am interested in seeing others. Hi Aaron, not sure what it's like Stateside, but in the UK, I'm pretty sure insurance is essential even if just recommending repairs and alterations to people working on their own bikes, not just providing these yourselves. There are ways to get around insurance but it's usually frowned upon from what I gather. Whilst many insurers here can offer coverage, a few (such as Butterworth Spengler) specialise in cycling and can thus provide comprehensive quotes, are familiar with risks and if anything does go wrong, they're probably better placed to support. We offer popup-servicing to local corporate clients as well as training and servicing in our workshop within a gift economy (essentially on a 'pay what you can' basis) and we need a minimum of £5Million Public Liability and Products insurance for this. I hand built our premises, turning a shipping container into a solar powered, insulated timber framed workshop and due to this, I think we pay a bit more (it's pretty odd and anything odd = uncertainty = risk = ££ / $$ it seems). Also, because it's in a high risk area. We have very comprehensive Risk Assessments, Method Statements and loads of policies - but this doesn't seem to have dropped out insurance premium...useful though ;) Not sure whether this info is helpful but do message me if I can be of assistance. Insurance for Collectives Offering Repair Services

Hey Bike-tankers, Many collectives seem to be offering repair services during Covid-times to help keep the lights on. Some non-profit shops have been offering repair services <https://freewheelbikes.org/service-and-repair/> for a while. There has been some mention of repair liability insurance and I would like to know more. Our shop is considering offering repair services, and I am wondering...Is it a good idea? Do we need insurance? Where can we find insurance? How much does it cost? Those types of things... Thanks in advance! Aaron

Hi Dennis, We run an Earn-a-Bike programme at the Bristol Bike Project so I might be able to help out. What exactly do you need and what is it for? Are you looking to set one up? I could forward our annual impact report if it's helpful. We manage to run our programme without funding because we use donated bikes and secondhand parts, volunteer time, and charge £20 at the end for a lock and lights, which covers our costs. Of course if you wanted to do the whole thing for free then you would need some funding but we don't have any funding docs that would be useful. Let me know if you'd like to discuss more. Hi All Does anyone have any grant application docs / program reports / documentation from their build-a-bike programs? We have some post-covid grants coming out trying to promote physical activity and social engagement among young people, it seems like build-a-bike would fit the bill.
